About this deal

Mix different colour and white lights modes to create the perfect light ambience for your daily moment. Save it and call it out at any time with app, WiZmote or voice. Philips Hue has long been the gold standard in smart lighting, but it’s an expensive system to buy into. If you’re looking for something a bit cheaper, then the WiZ smart lighting system could be for you. Developed by Signify, the company that owns Hue, WiZ has a large range of bulbs, is cheaper to buy and, as it uses Wi-Fi, doesn’t need a Bridge to get the most out of it. The WiZ app keeps records of the energy consumption of your lights. View your weekly or daily report and plan your lighting wisely for optimised energy consumption at home. As the WiZmote connects directly to lights, it’s just as responsive to use as the Hue remotes and switches. Should your Wi-Fi go down, the WiZmote will continue to work, so you can still adjust brightness and cycle through your selected scenes.

Following the wizard in the app, it’s pretty easy to get the bulbs connected to the app. Once there, WiZ gets you to organise bulbs into rooms, so you can control groups of lights together. You’ll need good Wi-Fi where you want to connect your lights. For utility, WiZ also has a Circadian Rhythm option. This lets you select the colour of the light during the day, starting with a colder light from the wake-up time you select, moving through to a warmer tone for the bedtime you set. In this way, you have more natural lighting that will more closely match that of daylight, although this feature isn’t as sensitive as the similar one on the Dyson Lightcycle Morph, which adjusts light temperature based on your location and the time of year. Calex – There are a few ZigBee GU10 bulbs on the market that work with Hue. Calex do sell bulbs in Tesco and other retailers here in the UK, but these are Wi-Fi bulbs and do not work with Hue.If you’re integrating with HomeKit, only official Philips Hue bulbs will work via the Hue and HomeKit integration (unless you have Homebridge). No, LIFX bulbs do not work with Hue because they are Wi-Fi bulbs whereas Hue is a Zigbee-based system. However, both brands work with Alexa, Google Home, and HomeKit which you can use to include both LIFX and Hue bulbs in your smart home. Does Nanoleaf Work With Hue? No, Nanoleaf products cannot be used with the Philips Hue bridge. The Hue bridge uses Zigbee to communicate with bulbs whereas Nanoleaf products use either Wi-Fi or the new Thread standard. Do Govee Lights Work With Hue? As WiZ uses Wi-Fi, the number of bulbs you can connect depends on your router. Typically, routers support up to 254 devices in total, but that includes your computers, TVs and so on. Realistically, you’re unlikely to hit the limit of your router, unless you want a massive installation of WiZ bulbs. GLEDOPTO – This is a German-based brand so it’s not too far from our shores. They have Hue-compatible smart bulbs, however, these don’t have great colour reproduction. Where this brand does excel, is their controllers for LED lights which can help you add light strips and other built-in lights to Hue. Hopefully, they will make their products available in the UK soon.

Most third party bulbs support power-on behaviour which allows you to determine what state bulbs return to after a power cut (see my guide to setting up power-on behaviour). The remote is a useful tool to have, say leaving it sat on a table, giving you control without having to reach for your phone. It’s a little basic (it looks like the kind of cheap remote you get with a budget speaker), but gives you on/off control, dimming, plus shortcuts to turn on the night light mode and your choice of four scenes. FeaturesSo far, this guide has focused on hue-compatible bulbs in the UK. However, there are many more manufacturers that offer support, mostly sold in continental Europe and the USA. I thought it was worthwhile to give them a mention here for any international readers: While Hue doesn’t provide much in the way of dynamic scenes, WiZ does. With the likes of Fireplace or Ocean, your lights can shift colours gently creating a more intensive mood than a solid colour alone provides. The special bedtime and wake up scenes run over a 30 minute period, dimming or brightening the lights automatically.

The best bulbs that work with Philips Hue available in the UK are Innr, Lidl, IKEA Trådfri, and Linkind. Below is some information about each brand. Choose from a palette of millions of light colours to create an amazing atmosphere in your home. Enjoy the subtle differences that our dynamic light effects glow your environmentThis project hasn't been entirely smooth sailing; the Home app and the bulbs sometimes need a minute to see each other if you turn the bulbs on and off with a light switch, and one unfortunate power outage totally disrupted communication between the bulbs and my Raspberry Pi. I might have been able to troubleshoot it with enough time, but my setup is simple enough that I just reset everything and did it all over again. But that's a risk you run with any smart home DIY project, and my house needs enough bulbs in each room that it's worth dealing with some headaches in exchange for a much lower cost per bulb. Use the preset well-being features in the WiZ app to and enjoy the lighting pattern best suited for your circadian rhythm throughout the day. WiZ will provide you bright daylight when you need to get energised and focus, and transition smoothly to soft warm white to help you relax and sleep better. Most budget smart lighting brands don’t have a very wide selection of bulbs, but WiZ is different, supporting most of the common connectors including GU10, E27, E14 and B22. That’s the same type of connectors as available on Hue. In particular, it’s good to see the E14 connector, as this is typically used for smaller desktop lamps and some light fittings.
