Before using either of the above items it’s always worth practicing for a while to get used to the intensity of the flame/heat settings and also how fast a surface is heated and how long the heat source can remain in one place before it causes and scorching or damage. Once all the loose paint had been removed it was time for a wash down and also went over the rest of the door with the scouring ball and soapy water to clean the whole surface. We get many questions regarding stripping paint from flaky walls, door and window frames etc. As is the case with many jobs the final finished product will be reflected by the prep work carried out on the surface. Leave the Home Strip on the surface for about 40 minutes and then test a small area to see if the paint is ready to come off. The scraper you use should simply slide under the paint or varnish and a little elbow grease may be needed. The video shows an extensive test where we tried to remove 4 coats of paint in one go but by applying a little less Home Strip and being a bit more patient, you can remove the 4 coats in two attempts. Unlike the gel type where in most cases you can see the reaction occurring, you will be unable to if you use paste so ensure you wait for the full amount of time specified by the manufacturer. As with the other paint stripping methods wear eye protection and also a mask. Heating paint can in some cases give off harmful fumes. Also, always, always wear a pair of heavy duty gloves such as riggers gloves. The bottom quarter was the worst affected and needed to remove all of the loose flaky paint prior to preparing the door for new primer and paint. Sanding was not an option due to raised panels and Home Strip was used to start this project off. What was easy about using Home Strip, is how safe it is- totally non-toxic, safe to use in public areas, around pets and passing wildlife. A liberal coat was applied by brush and as we needed to remove multi-layered coatings it was covered with plastic film then left overnight to do its magic. Apply a liberal amount of stripper all over the table surface using an old soft paintbrush. If you can remove the legs of the table then do this after you have removed the varnish from the tabletop as this means you won’t need to worry about the varnish that is deep in the joins of the legs and tabletop that can be difficult to remove. Gently lift the varnish following the direction of the grain using a smooth-edged scraper. When you have removed all of the varnish layers wipe it over with warm soapy water and you will see a huge difference, you may be surprised at the original colour and grain which layers of varnish will hide and it will often change your mind about what you will do with it next. Wood oil is an amazing product to use to upcycle a table after the varnish has been removed as it will protect it but you will still see the original wood and surface which can be beautiful.
