About this deal

To understand how smokeless fire pits work you first need to know what creates smoke. When a fire doesn’t completely combust its fuel, the unburned oils, tar, ash, and carbon become smoke. When a fire has enough oxygen to completely burn the fuel all that’s produced is water and carbon dioxide. We found the interior to be relatively cavernous, which means more wood fit inside, and with that you get bigger fires and more heat. Other than the first couple of minutes when we lit the kindling, the X Series was virtually smokeless, as promised. In terms of gas, propane is more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than natural gas. Most fire pits are built to burn propane gas but many can be converted to run on natural gas if required. What is the best stone for fire pit? But is the Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 really smokeless? This has to be the million-dollar question and the answer, from me, is yes. And no. The Breeo Y-Series comes from the brand that introduced the first smokeless fire pit to the market. It's smaller and lighter than previous models with an added handle on the body—it's positioned to balance the fire pit when carried in one hand at your side.

A BBQ fire pit is a great multifunctional tool, in that you can use it for flame-grill cooking as well as warmth (perfect if you're short on space). It makes an interesting centrepiece for any garden event, and if you opt for a larger than average pit, it can accommodate food for big parties.Solo Stove’s Bonfire 2.0 is an update to the Bonfire we previously tested, now including a removable ash pan. While its smokeless performance remains unchanged, the ash pan does add about five pounds to the overall weight. It’s not recommended to put a Solo Stove in a fire pit as it can obstruct ventilation and increase the risk of fire.

If you’re on the hunt for a completely smokeless tabletop fire pit that can be easily moved around and used indoors too, this Bio ethanol model is an excellent buy. To cook with the FirePit+, create a small fire in the main chamber. Then insert the fuel basket by hanging it on the provided hooks instead of placing it on the bottom of the chamber as you would for a bonfire. This allows the charcoal briquettes to sit above the flame and centered amidst the top oxygen jets. Just be sure that your small fire on the base is truly lit before inserting the basket, but not so tall that you can’t maneuver above the flame to put in the basket. It’s a tight fit so the basket must be slanted to enter the chamber and then righted before hanging. It’s a design flaw, but you can still get the job done. The grill goes on top and once properly heated, you can cook away. It is very compact, so don’t plan to grill for the neighborhood on this. When we tested the Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 on a more inclement day – when there were mild Spring-time winds but nothing that would dry your sheets in record time – the firepit was more or less smokeless. But, on the days when we tested it when the wind appeared to be coming from three directions – as it often does here on the edge of Dartmoor – its smokeless powers failed somewhat. The flames are powered through gas that you can easily switch on and off. You can get portable models, however most gas fire pits tend to be permanent –and they can be expensive. First for the science bit. Solo Stove’s smokeless situation works via secondary burn, made possible thanks to its double-skin steel construction with vent holes at the top and bottom. Cool air is pulled through the bottom, heats up within the double cavity, and rises to the top, which invokes secondary combustion as the hot air exits the top vents. If you want to enjoy your fire pit in comfort, a patio set with a fire pit table is a great option. You can choose from a range of different seating options (from 5 to 9 seats) and the set comes with a large, glass-topped table with an integral fire pit that’s protected with a glass windshield.

If you want something to keep you warm while relaxing in your garden but don’t fancy a fire pit, here are some other outdoor heating options to try. Chimineas To empty the ash pan, we had to reach in and remove the perforated bottom grate and tip it to dump any ash off and into the pan below. After removing the grate, we could remove and dump the pan though the pan is smaller than the grate, so some ash is going to fall around the outside edge. Fire pits are an excellent buy and they’re incredibly effective at producing heat, as well as creating an attractive focal point. This artsy centrepiece is part of Aldi's garden shop range. It features a modern chrome-plated geometric design and stone-effect finish. There are many fire pit models to choose from and these are determined by the fuel they require; you can opt for wood burning, natural gas, propane gas or Bio ethanol for gel fires. The Breeo was sent to me for free last summer, but I tested and reviewed it with the same objectivity as the Solo Stove. Testing the Smokeless Claim Smoke from green wood and leaves doesn’t last long in the Solo Stove. Scott Einsmann It seemed to radiate a lot of heat out at an angle thanks to the bowl shape and created a warm zone in the shape of an inverted, squat cone, even when the flames weren’t reaching out of the fire pit. When they were, we could feel even more heat radiating straight out from them.

Most are powered with bio-ethanol, which means it won’t create smoke and should be easy to switch on and off. It should also have some type of safety screen or glass surrounding it. But if you find that the accompanying smoke dampens that pleasure, or if your neighbors prefer to keep their bedroom windows open to catch the cool air, you might consider using a so-called smokeless fire pit, which eliminates some (but not all) of your fire’s smoke and most of the ash. Wet logs and house coal emit higher levels of PM so if you still want to invest in a fire pit, always burn dry wood.
