About this deal

Later on in her career Ms Howes appeared in films including 1980's Death Ship and Female Artillery in 1973. She returned for cameo appearances in the soap over the next few years but in 2016 she played Peggy for the last time. Her final scenes aired in May that year. Instinctively anticipating an era of full disclosure by entertainment celebrities and reality stars, Windsor from her earliest years of success often spoke openly about personal health and emotional issues, her turbulent love life, her five abortions and the way she was attracted to villainous men. Because of this, and that friendly grin, the public felt they almost knew her like a neighbour rather than a performer. She was “a part of the people”, as the great variety star Chesney Allen once said of his and Bud Flanagan’s relationship with the public. “There was no barrier.” This was strongly reinforced in 1994 when Windsor joined the cast of EastEnders as Albert Square’s matriarch. She is survived by her younger brother, the actor John Quayle, and by Katy, her daughter from her 1976 marriage to the agent and theatre producer Donald Baker, which ended in divorce. In her autobiography, Windsor talked about her five abortions: three in her 20s, and the last at the age of 42. She said she never wanted children as a result of her father rejecting her after her parents' divorce. [66]
