About this deal

Trailer tricycles are a different matter. Balance isn’t a problem, even with two passengers or a heavier load, because the trailer part doesn’t lean-steer.

In practice, bike handling is much the same as with other seatpost-mounted trailer cycles – just about adequate. It isn’t as sturdy, but it is cheaper.

With a tandem

How much space do you have to securely store your bike and accessories, and do they need to be transported by car? (If space is a problem the FollowMe Tandem is the smallest option.) Adults can feel themselves getting more tired; children can conk out in moments and suddenly be upset and tearful. Our guide to going on a bike ride with children has some useful tips.

From 12 months to around 2 years, look for a model that has a parent control bar and good straps and safety belt so your child can’t fall out of the trike if you go over a bump. Side bars should also enclose them a bit so that they feel secure. They don’t ‘need’ pedals at this stage but will soon be wanting to learn to use them - look out for footrests instead. Six- or seven-speed gears don’t add much to the cost of a trailer cycle and are well worth having. Your passenger can contribute more to the ride by pedalling on the flat and uphill. It’s good practice for a child’s own bike, too. We love that when the waist bar is installed the child isn’t able to turn the handlebars so the parent is in full control of the bike. Then as the child gets bigger and more independent you can let them take a bit of control, then finally you can remove the parent handle altogether to be left with a classic trike for the child to ride independently. All-in-all, this tricycle is the ideal option for children eager to get started and it's one that will grow with them too. Most of the time you won’t get that much help in powering along. Yet when your co-rider does pedal in earnest, you will feel it and it does make a difference. This vintage-style trike looks beautiful with its chunky, grippy rubber tyres, built in footrest, and steel frame. Unlike the other trikes in our list, the Trybike doesn’t have any pedals and is meant as a safe and sturdy introduction to balance bikes. And once they get bigger and build up their confidence you can use the supplied tools to convert the trike to a balance bike to last them all the way up to 6 years old.this double stroller is specially designed for children over 6 months old, the children's cooperation awareness, team spirit, etc., with free play, adults control direction is convenient.

This great looking trike from Globber is ideal for growing kids and easily adapts to suit them at different ages. It starts off as a solid, sturdy infant trike that’s suitable from 10 months old and is perfect for helping them learn to pedal and build their bike-riding confidence. Then as they get older you can easily convert the infant trike to a guided bike, then training bike, and finally to a balance bike by switching the wheels round and storing the pedals under the comfy, anti-slip seat.

If colour's what you're after then you can't go far wrong with the Chad Valley My First Trike. With grippy handles and wide wheels, this trike is great for short trips to the park with toddlers who are just building up confidence – and it won't break the bank if they soon want to trade it in for a balance bike. DS had a balance bike at 2 but it wasn’t until he was 3 that he really got into it. He loved his scuttlebug at that age though.” (Recommended by Spudlet) Our verdict Trikes span a huge age range with some suitable from as young as 10 months, but most trikes start at the one year mark. Watch out, children can even fall fast asleep as they’re being towed along. On a trailer cycle, if they fall asleep they generally fall off. Tag-along trailers are a good alternative. Is a tag-a-long or tow bar the right choice for you?

At two years plus, you’ll still want a bit of parental control but might be looking at a model where you can remove the handle bar to help them start to propel themselves under their own steam. Do say how much you appreciate the help – it’s good for their morale. Your child won’t be able to keep pedalling hard for very long, so if you’re on a big ride encourage him or her to conserve energy. Call for help when you see that hill ahead with a casual: “Time for a turbo boost!” Many Mumsnet users say they favour balance bikes over tricycles, citing the transition to pedalling as being much easier (and often shorter) thanks to the absence of training wheels right from the get-go.If you’re looking for a trike that you can use instead of the buggy on trips to the park and out and about then the Q Play Rito Star is a great option. From as young as 10 months your child can sit in the comfy seat, put their feet up on the footrests, and enjoy the view while you have full control. We love that the handle on this trike is similar to those on a pushchair so you can comfortably use both hands to push and steer.
