Differentiation in spelling - Make sure you give avarietyof words from the four different knowledges so that the children don't become reliant on only one knowledge. If you just give children words that you sound out, then that's all they will be able to do later on. Every text is made up of content words and functionwords- it's the function words that causeproblems. If they can do it orally and then put it into a piece of writing and then spell it correctly then they have made huge progress with their literacy. LS: OK, I had one older completely indulgent question…which is that in another interview you mentioned Strange Stories and Amazing Facts, which rewrote my brain when I was a little kid.

You cannot put after and following next to each other. You must slide another time connective in between or it becomes too complex.

LS: As a reader, I certainly didn’t come away feeling like he was like the hero of the story, as much as he was the protagonist in the story, cause I liked how you sort of shaded in—again I don’t want to spoil the story—but the way that you sort of shaded in what’s actually going on so that you start to see more and more what the reality is versus his perception of the reality. A central thread running through all of the webinars was the importance of explicitly teaching writing and a gradual release of responsibility– moving from modelling to shared and interactive to independent writing. Modelling →LS: I haven’t watched it yet! I have to be in the right mood, and I keep seeing people talking about literally throwing up during them, which, nothing bothers me? So, I can’t imagine that this will. But maybe I should test that. How can we explicitly teach children how to spell ? The g ap between reading and writing is too high for many children. We need to close the gap. How can we do this ? By giving the learners thefunctionwords they can focus their writing energy on rich content. If youwant to improve the quality ofchildren'swriting teach them the words they need to know. Function words are words that you can use all of your life. Stephen Graham Jones Awards". A tool that can be used for many writing tasks is “the describing bubble” (replicated here Describing Bubble) – and it is useful to have this in poster form/on the whiteboard so that it can be referred to often. This supports children and young people to develop paragraphs. Children need to do something in continuous text, not just be able to spell it for a spelling test. They need :What kinds of words do you need for a recount ? You need a good bundle of time connectives, past tense action words and personal pronouns.
