About this deal

It focuses about as fast as Nikon's 200-500mm, but it's not instantaneous as are the Canon 100-400mm L IS II, Canon 70-300mm USM IS II and the Nikon 70-300 AF-P VR. Personally I own and love my Canon 100-400mm L IS II, which focuses faster and is smaller, lighter, less expensive and much better made of almost all metal — but doesn't go to 600mm. To test the effectiveness of the OS image stabilization of the Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS, I did a series of 120 test-shots hand-held at 600mm focal length and tested with shutter speeds from 1/640 of a second down to 1/40 sec. I used the shots at 1/640 sec with OS=off as reference of how good my hand-holding was at the time of the test and Reikan FoCal did the chore of evaluating the sharpness of all shots. Sell the kit you’re not using to MPB. Trade in for the kit you need to create. Buy used, spend less and get more. Buy. Sell. Trade. Create. Pincushion distortion is present throughout the zoom range. At 150mm there is 1.82% pincushion distortion, which decreases to 1.01% at 600mm, which shouldn't cause issues in normal use. If absolutely straight lines are paramount, then you'll be glad to hear that the distortion pattern is uniform across the frame, which should make applying corrections in image editing software fairly straightforward.

What I learned from this test is that the price of the lens is NOT a good indicator of the performance of the lens–at least in this case. The PR teams for camera manufacturers love a good acronym or three. The formal name of this lens is the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens. Here’s what all that means, decoded: Overall, aside from the focusing ring issue pointed out above, the build quality of the Sigma 150-600mm feels on par with the Tamron 150-600mm, and way below the quality of the Sigma 150-600mm Sport. Controls Vibration reduction is designed to counteract the slight shaking you get when shooting handheld. It might only be a small amount of shake, but at long focal lengths it’s amplified many times over. With an effective, modern vibration reduction system, you can often get an extra 2-3 stops before the shaking starts noticeably blurring the photos. In my experience, I wasn’t able to get anywhere near that–perhaps 1 stop at most.

I am not set up to test to see if it's true to 600mm, but the focal length on all three lenses seems to have exactly the same reach. All paint; no engraving except for a couple of dots and ⅜ markings on tripod foot and the serial number. I’ve leveraged both its manual and autofocus modes for optimal precision. The lens’s Optical Stabilization system, with its general and panning modes, has been invaluable.Sigma manufactures a larger selection of lenses for digital SLR and Mirrorless cameras. Besides, the quality of the Sigma lens is just unbeatable and considered a well-known brand. Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. In the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary lens, Sigma employed an iris diaphragm with nine rounded blades, which has resulted in very nice bokeh in our view. We do realise, however, that bokeh evaluation is subjective, so we've included several 100% crops for your perusal. One of my favorite subjects to photograph is wildlife, so when asked to review the Sigma 150-600mm lens, I was excited about the opportunity to see how its results compared to my Tamron 150-600mm. This Sigma 60-600mm is sharp, focuses well, covers a huge zoom range, focuses very close at most focal lengths and its stabilization allows easy hand-holding at all zoom settings, especially 600mm. Its tripod foot has an Arca-Swiss groove.

Hey Jim, Just curious… if you were buying a landscape/wildlife lens to take on an Alaskan Cruise, would you go with the Sigma 150-600, or the Canon 100-400 F4.5 – 5.6 II. I realize that the lenses are over a 1,000 dollars difference, but I want the best glass and most usable focal lengths. I will be using the Canon 7d mkII as the body, so the 1.6 crop would give me 160 to 640 on the Canon and a whopping 240 to 960 on the Sigma.. Is that approaching too long? Would the incremental stops of light be worth the difference? The padded front cover velcros-on as shown here with the hood reversed. It also covers the front with the hood mounted for use.

With a rounded 9-bladed diaphragm, I don't see any significant sunstars on brilliant points of light, not just because it's a rounded diaphragm, but also because a lens like this is usually shot wide-open or close to it. For handheld shooting, the Contemporary lens is a much more comfortable proposition. But if you’re used to shooting with a tripod or monopod when you use long telephoto lenses, the weight gain of the Sports lens will be less of an issue. Price: The Sigma 150-600 DN comes at a recommended retail price of 1399 EUR (incl. 19% VAT) / 1499 USD / 1199 GBP. The Tamron 150-500 is 1499 EUR / 1399 USD / 1379 GBP, the Sony 200-600 is 1670 EUR / 2000 USD / 1500 GBP. The older DSLR designs currently sell for 1650 EUR / 1850 USD / 1330 GBP (Sigma 150-600 HSM Sports) and 1000 EUR / 1200 USD / 850 GBP (Tamron 150-600). [0] The difference between the Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS going up to 600mm versus the Tamron 150-500mm f5-6.7 Di III VC reaching “only” 500mm is visible but might not be the decisive factor for choosing a zoom lens. If the image at 500mm is sharp enough, cropping a 42MP shot at 500mm to match the angle-of-view at 600mm still nets you around 29MP. This might well be enough for the intended purpose.
