About this deal

This book is such a fun and unique read! It was pitched as 'the lesbian love story you've been waiting for' AND IT TRULY WAS!!!! This book gives you two lesbians who unexpectedly meet and we get to see their messy, fun and heartwarming journey as they fall in love, up until one of them suddenly dies. Ash is so confused and in denial when she wakes up after the accident to 3 strangers in a place she's never been before; and it doesn't help when they try to explain to her that she's now a grim reaper, because they don't exist, right!? Well, actually they do, and what ensues is a mix between Ash being in disbelief that she's died, and us slowly getting to know the other reapers, who slowly but surely form a family and help Ash deal with her grief. Ash is heartbroken, and completely lost, only then does she learn that trying to connect with her loved ones like she had planned will result in their early death. So Ash begins her new life as a reaper, until one day, her girlfriend sees her. Actually sees her, and recognises her!!

After Love is a 2020 British drama film written and directed by Aleem Khan in his feature-length directorial debut. The film stars Joanna Scanlan as widow Mary Hussain discovering her husband's secret family after he unexpectedly dies It is also an island that has spawned Nobel Laureate in literature, V.S. Naipaul and other notable writers such as C.L.R James. Afterlove is a gorgeously-written paranormal(ish) romance(is) YA novel. I say “ish” because it’s sort of both of these things but also not. It blends aspects of each very successfully to come up with something wholly in its own class. Trinidad is a place where enriching the mind is of utmost importance. Persaud's characters do not represent this part of the island, the tapestry she weaves cuts off a large portion of the good of the country and people.

Inspiration #6

The story includes some pretty heavy themes of domestic abuse, self-harm and homophobia, but all are handled with great sensitivity. Some readers may find the Trini vernacular a bit hard to handle, but I really enjoyed it and felt that it lent the story a great sense of atmosphere. I didn't know what all the words or expressions meant, but I could mostly glean an understanding from the context. All of a sudden, this quirky adorable romance becomes a rushed attempt at exploring our relationship with, well, life and it’s fragility. Here one minute, could be gone the next— all very They Both Die At The End but make it British Lesbians.

Persaud will move this story to the harrowing streets of inner New York City and the consequences it will play on the lives of these characters. Each chapter is entitled with the name of the character and spoken from their own perspective. The language befits the dialogue of Trinidad and you'll soon feel its smoothness and lilt. It couldn't be told any other way. Love After Love touches on that very emotion that carries such a deeply embedded personal response in all of us. This is definitely one to keep your eye out for. Solo, whose voices joins the narrative chorus, ostensibly for a holiday to visit his uncle, Sunil's brother, but he actually intends to stay and never return to Trinidad or see his mother ever again. The novel then follows Solo's struggles in New York, where he resorts to cutting, Mr Chetan's difficulties in a strongly homophobic society, and Betty as the one who cares for them both while hoping she may find love. She has also contributed to several short story anthologies including A CHANGE IS GONNA COME, which was named Sunday Times Children's Book of the Week and was honoured with a Special Achievement Award by the YA Book Prize. For Khan, the turning point came at university, when he began to come to terms with his own sexuality – and to lose faith in his religion. “I was grappling with how to reconcile between gay and Muslim,” he recalls, “and it was only later that I understood that identities are not independent or uni-dimensional, but multiple and intersecting.” His crisis coincided with something similar that was happening to his mother. “Things happen in families when the kids grow up,” is all he will say about that.Education is also free and compulsory between ages 5 and 16 up until university. It is also considered one of the most educated countries in the world with a literacy rate exceeding 98% -- Betty Ramdin was only twenty years old when she met married her husband Sunil. The marriage was Betty’s way to get some form of freedom, live in and run her own house. The marriage started off great but soon evolved into a toxic relationship Betty could not leave. A few years into the marriage Betty has Solo, her one son who she dotes and maybe spoils a lot. When things in the marriage gets rough, Betty’s only focus is protecting her son from Sunil. On the night of Solo’s birthday, Betty’s husband died from falling down the stairs. At age forty Betty is now on her own raising her son and looking after a house that is entirely too much for her.
