About this deal

Below we will discuss surfboard fin set up in detail, with a concentration on twin fins, when to use them, their pros and cons, and whether they are right for you. Richards was focussed on carving powerful arcs, and the way in which one fin works as a pivot point for the other in a twin setup allowed him to do just that, redirecting the board with ease. However, the bigger and more powerful the waves grew (6ft being a generous threshold), the more difficult it became to control this pivoting tendency, particularly in deep bottom turns. A twin fin surfboard is truly the best way to shred small waves and approach larger surf with style-oriented and stylish flow, and for increased hold. The increased hold of keel fins makes them an excellent choice for surfing The twin fin surfboard has seen a surge in popularity recently and it’s now become a staple of every, well rounded surf quiver.

Even before MR’s development of the twin-fin model, a double-fin configuration had always been synonymous with speed, due to the way water channels between the two fins. In that sense, what made Richards’ design unique wasn’t the fact that it had two fins, but the way in which he combined other design elements – chiefly the shape of the tail and the position and outline of the fins – to optimise the design’s potential, creating a more versatile craft altogether. By the second half of the 1970s, surfboards were decreasing in size at lightning speed. This was in response to surfers’ changing attitude towards wave-riding and, consequently, the way that competitions on the new pro tour were judged. If you wanted to win, you were expected to manoeuvre your way along the wave, hitting the lip as often and as hard as possible, and not just cruise down the line. Although a single-fin was still the overall board of choice for hollow and big-wave locations, when the swell died off and the contest had to run in small conditions, the surfing on that kind of board couldn’t live up to the judges’ expectations. If the board on your radar happens to be a twin fin, there are two main things to bear in mind. First, this (usually) is more of a small-to-medium wave sort of board. And second, it is more about fun than high performance. It is both special and specific. The advantage of having removable fins on a three fin board is that you ultimately have three different fin set up possibilities: Now you can’t chat about twin fin surfboards without bringing Mark Richards into the mix! MR signature twin fin style and spray jobs make his full range of boards pretty iconic, none more so than the 1980 retro pro complete with stingers in the tail. Simply put, a surfboard is best with at least one center fin, and generally should not have more than four (although in some cases five fins are used).

Keel Twin Fins have a large surface area with a bigger base and less depth, which creates speed, drive and stability. This style of fin is perfect for classic drivey surfing with drawn out turns. They are mostly used in traditional fish boards and mini simmons, basically any board with a very wide tail. Of course, you can try surfing your longboard with only two fins, just as you can surf with no fins, but it will be an interesting experience. How Many Fins Should a Surfboard Have?
