A classic destination for those working in and around Clerkenwell and Farringdon, The Crown Tavern is pretty iconic. It might not be the fanciest, the cheapest, or the most impressive, but it’s got a buzz. A buzz from years of those living and working nearby visiting, enjoying (and braving) the outdoor tables, or huddling inside. Outside the two-story building, The Clerkenwell And Social a number of outdoor benches and seating. However, it’s worth noting that these are usually the first to fill up on busy night (such as Thursday or Friday), so it’s good to arrive early or even book if you can. White explains that Tom is a keen chef and applied the same skills to crafting mixers. White says he took an almost culinary approach to deciding on the botanical blend, looking into the characteristics of whiskies and rums to find complementary flavours using food grade aromatherapy oils and just simple sugar and water. One of the other major differences between Sekforde Drinks and other mixers brands was that gin was never the primary focus.
So, in her kitchen on Sekforde Street, she dreamed up Sekforde Drinks, created for mixing and tailored around the spirits themselves in every aspect. Laying on the doorstep of the ‘city’ and close to the “hip” London areas of Shoreditch and Islington, Clerkenwell and Farringdon is a real mixture of offices, small businesses and residential streets, but unlike other areas close the “the city” there’s often quite a buzz, quite likely down to people enjoying these pubs in and around the area. Tom and Talula were looking for a mixer to pair with dark spirits like rum and whisky. Talula White explained to Verdict: However, with huge names like Schweppes and Fever-Tree available, Sekforde had to provide something different. Maison Bellot is available in Original Lemonade, a blend of French apple juice pressed with zesty lemons; Grapefruit, a tart drink that pairs beautifully with the sweet flavour from French apples; and Lemon & Ginger, a blend of French apple juice finished with zesty pressed lemons infused with the warmth of ginger.

Plus the amount of brand collaboration which is necessary to make a name for your brand and to even be able to have it sold into venues in the first place. Being a small brand meant that for the first year or so of running Sekforde, there had to be an intense effort of getting acquainted with the drinks industry, spreading awareness about the brand and building relationships with bars, bartenders, suppliers and brands.” Max Halley and Ethan Davids are opening their third pub together in the market town of Marlborough in Wiltshire.
Sekforde Drinks’ Aromatic Raspberry, Rose & Sage soda can be enjoyed on its own as a soft drink but has also been tailored to mix with gin and vodka (our panellists tasted it with Chase Distillery Gin). When creating your mixers, what trials and errors have you experienced in the process when testing various flavours of mixers? The Dovetail was recently taken over by new ownership, however, their promise is to stay the same. Hidden away, in the centre of Jerusalem Passage, The Dovetail is Belgian beer drinks haven. Featuring an array of import draught and bottles, The Dovetail allows you to try all forms of flavours and types of beers. The Three Kings is located less than 20 yards from The Crown, just off of the Clerkenwell Green. Having recently been refurbished, there is still the traditional buzz, but now with a new ‘”freshness” that can’t be understated. Sekforde was born out of founder Talula White’s frustration with the limited, uninspiring ways to enjoy her favourite spirits. Cola and ginger, while delicious, mask the taste of whisky and rum and can contain high levels of sugar.With the boom in bespoke, craft, and luxury spirits, more people than ever are paying attention to the drinks themselves. More and more people are seeing drinks tasting as a hobby. Located (quite literally) next to Farringdon Station, The Castle is great little pub at the centre of the area and frequent stopping off point for those working in the area. Staying open till quite late (usually 11pm), The Castle can get a bit busy at peak times, with a commuters often going in with friends and colleagues for after work drinks – or for “one last one” on their way to the station.
The rum mixer is centred around lime, mint, sage, rose and cacao bitters. With a lighter rum, it is grassy and fresh, perfect for a hot day. With heavy or aged rums, you get more of the caramel flavours coming through. Located about less than 2 minutes walk from The Jerusalem Tavern, on St. John’s Square, The Clerkenwell And Social is a bit more of a bar than a pub. One the most modern of the pubs I think are the best in Clerkenwell, The Clerkenwell And Social a really love spot to meet friends, colleagues, and even the odd client.Unfortunately, neither Talula nor Tom had any experience in the drinks industry, so Sekforde Drinks started as a project in their spare time. They carbonated their first attempts with a soda stream before testing their experiments with a selection of the spirits. Of course, the first major challenge for the Whites was turning their homemade mixers into an actual drinks business. The pair felt that there was a gap in the market with mixers. At 60 calories per bottle and under, they contain no added sugar, no artificial sweeteners, no colourings, no preservatives and are never from concentrate.
