About this deal

This is probably the most famous example of a rum cask-finished whisky, an increasingly popular choice for brands and distilleries who want to add a delicious dose of flavour from a source with historical precedent. You all know the classic from one of Speyside’s standouts, so we thought we’d showcase some other whiskies that have benefitted from a rum-soaked secondary maturation. Terebelo, Binyomin (2022-01-01). "Oak Used To Create Casks For Aging Spirits Such As Made At Terebelo Distillery". Terebelo. Seaspray coats brown sugar, charred pineapple, cinnamon, and more as Glen Scotia embraces the past (rum casks were on sale in Campbeltown as early as 1815, told you there was history behind this) by taking its already delicious bourbon barrel matured single malt and finishing it in first-fill Guyanese Demerara rum barrels. Double the cask, double the flavour.

Lots of Islay smoke is joined here by BBQ pineapple, fresh mango, cola cube sweetness, waxy orange and vanilla as Smokehead brings together salty and sweet. The brand bottles Islay single malt Scotch whisky from an undisclosed distillery to do interesting things with, in this case popping it in casks that have previously held Caribbean rum. barrel". A barrel is one of several units of volume, with dry barrels, fluid barrels (UK beer barrel, US beer barrel), oil barrel, etc. The volume of some barrel units is double others, with various volumes in the range of about 100–200 litres (22–44impgal; 26–53USgal).

Some wines are fermented "on barrel", as opposed to in a neutral container like steel or wine-grade HDPE (high-density polyethylene) tanks. Wine can also be fermented in large wooden tanks, which—when open to the atmosphere—are called "open-tops". Other wooden cooperage for storing wine or spirits range from smaller barriques to huge casks, with either elliptical or round heads. Wooden casks of various sizes were used to store whale oil on ships in the age of sail. Its viscous nature made sperm whale oil a particularly difficult substance to contain in staved containers. Oil coopers were probably the most skilled coopers in pre-industrial cooperage. Olive oil, seed oils and other organic oils were also placed in wooden casks for storage or transport. Lots of tropical mango and banana alongside buttery caramel, brown sugar and rum spice are found in this delight from Ireland’s Tullamore D.E.W. The team took its original blend of pot still, malt and grain Irish whiskeys and finished it in first-fill casks which previously held Demerara rum.Charred pineapple and honeyed sweetness harmonise with the silky whiskey as two spirits collide in magnificent fashion from this collaboration between Ireland’s Teeling Distillery and Plantation Rum ! Teeling took its Small Batch blended Irish whiskey, initially matured in ex-bourbon and ex-Central American rum casks, and treated it to a further 12-month maturation in casks that previously contained the mouthwatering Plantation Pineapple Stiggins’ Fancy rum. Angels' share" is a term for the portion (share) of a wine or distilled spirit's volume that is lost to evaporation during aging in oak barrels. The ambient humidity tends to affect the composition of this share. Drier conditions tend to make the barrels evaporate more water, strengthening the spirit. However, in higher humidities, more alcohol than water will evaporate, therefore reducing the alcoholic strength of the product. This alcoholic evaporate encourages the growth of a darkly colored fungus, the angels' share fungus, Baudoinia compniacensis, which tends to appear on the exterior surfaces of most things in the immediate area. [25] [26] Water storage [ edit ] The Roman historian Pliny the Elder reports that cooperage in Europe originated with the Gauls in Alpine villages where they stored their beverages in wooden casks bound with hoops. [10] Pliny identified three different types of coopers: ordinary coopers, wine coopers and coopers who made large casks. [11] Large casks contain more and bigger staves and are correspondingly more difficulty to assemble. Roman coopers tended to be independent tradesmen, passing their skills on to their sons. The Greek geographer Strabo records that wooden pithoi (barrels) were lined with pitch to stop leakage and preserve the wine. [12] Lew Bryson (22 December 2008). (Subscription or participating institution membership required.) A barrel [1] or cask [2] is a hollow cylindrical container with a bulging center, longer than it is wide. They are traditionally made of wooden staves and bound by wooden or metal hoops. The word vat is often used for large containers for liquids, usually alcoholic beverages; [3] a small barrel or cask is known as a keg. [4]keg". Oxford English Dictionary (Onlineed.). Oxford University Press. (Subscription or participating institution membership required.) Although it is common to refer to draught beer containers of any size as barrels, in the UK this is strictly correct only if the container holds 36 imperial gallons. The terms " keg" and "cask" refer to containers of any size, the distinction being that kegs are used for beers intended to be served using external gas cylinders. Cask ales undergo part of their fermentation process in their containers, called casks.

Vernors ginger ale is marketed as having a "barrel-aged" flavor, and the syrup used to produce the beverage was originally aged in oak barrels when first manufactured in the 19th century. [24] Whether the syrup continues to be aged in oak is unclear. [24] Sherry is stored in 600-litre (130impgal; 160USgal) casks made of North American oak, which is slightly more porous than French or Spanish oak. The casks, or butts, are filled five-sixths full, leaving "the space of two fists" empty at the top to allow flor to develop on top of the wine. Sherry is also commonly swapped between barrels of different ages, a process that is known as solera. Angels' Share" redirects here. For the film, see The Angels' Share. The angels' share in the sherry aging produces fungus on the walls. [22] [23] Soft drinks [ edit ] Flavours of pineapple upside-down cake, honeyed orchard fruit, brown sugar, and cinnamon pastries can be enjoyed in this approachable single malt from The Glenlivet. For Caribbean Reserve, the clue is in the name, as the huge distillery took a portion of this whisky and finished in casks which previously held Caribbean rum. The distillery folks recommend making a malty twist on a Mai Tai with this, which sounds delicious.
