About this deal

As the saying goes, there’s more than one way to shine a penny. That said, I’ve been using GrooveWasher products on my records for over five years now, and I find they work exceptionally both manually by hand and in conjunction with a record cleaning machine. Mixing bottle (for preparing the cleaning liquid from Disco-Antistat Ultraclean and Disco-Antist BiDest) GrooveWasher does offer G3 Fluid for heavier cleaning needs. G3 is a more powerful formula that does require a rinse with GSR Super Rinse or distilled water. Type of Record Cleaner: Fluid and kit | Pros: Very gentle and effective | Cons: Very dirty old records may benefit from a stronger fluid

During the cleaning cycle, you could clearly see how differently the water behaved on the record surface with the addition of just a small drop of G-Sonic. Instead of moving over the record surface in patches, the water now consistently and evenly spread across the entire surface and was clearly entering the groove with ease. Many collectors sing the praises of ultrasonic cleaning for its ability to deep clean vinyl records without the need for brushes to scrub the surface physically. The process has long been popular in the jewelry industry for cleaning tiny cavities. The Tonar Knosti Disco-Antistat Ultrasonic vinyl washing machine combines high-tech ultrasonic cleaning with the proven goat hair brush system. This ensures gentle, groove-deep cleaning of your records and an audible improvement in the sound image. During operation, the special anti-static cleaning fluid is permanently clarified by a filter system and dirt particles are filtered out to minimise impurities in the fluid and thus achieve the best possible cleaning result. G2 does not fix scratches or scuffs. Once the signal in the microgroove is lost, nothing will recover it. Next up we tried the suede microfiber pad, which I believe GrooveWasher has produced for some time now, but it’s new to me. Curious to see how a surfactant could improve the result, I added a drop of GrooveWasher’s G-Sonic concentrate to the water tank. G-Sonic is a surfactant and emulsifier blend that helps aid the cleaning process and break water surface tension.

Some homemade remedies and even commercial record cleaning fluids contain isopropyl alcohol as one of the main ingredients. As a rule of thumb, if you can smell the alcohol, it is undoubtedly too much. Being UK-based, I’ve tried plenty of the manual cleaning options available this side of the pond (namely, Clear Groove and Vinyl Revival), but until now, I’ve been unable to test any US equivalents directly. I would like to thank the folks at GrooveWasher for changing all that by kindly sending me their starter kit in the mail. The GrooveWasher cleaning pad fabrics have been tested in the GrooveWasher laboratory and plant. Split microfiber, one of our cleaning fabrics, is many times more effective than other record cleaning fabrics.

Help Is Here

Several cleanings using GrooveWasher G2 Fluid may be required to remove these difficult contaminants. This is a common issue with pure distilled water that is usually rectified by adding a tiny amount of surfactant to the water. Adding just a small amount of surfactant can break the water tension and aid the cleaning process. NOTE: This Kit includes only G2 Record Cleaning Fluid and the label protector mask. Buy this Kit if you have a GrooveWasher Record Cleaning Kit or anotherother wiping method. All-in-all, this new design is a welcome addition to my record cleaning arsenal, as it makes sense to me that fine fibers can aid the process in a way regular microfiber clothes just can’t. A beautiful milled American Walnut handle. GrooveWasher claims these are hand sanded and rubbed by their own wood artisans. The pad itself is an all-purpose microfiber cleaning pad attached by velcro to allow for easy replacement or cleaning.

It’s nice to see GrooveWasher’s continued commitment to developing new tools that complement their cleaning fluids and we can’t wait to test the new G-Sonic ultrasonic cleaning surfactant (watch this space). The microfiber cleaning pads should be cleaned regularly and occasionally replaced for best results. The downside of cloths for cleaning vinyl records is, of course, that a dirty cloth or pad could spread dirt and dust to the next record you clean. To ensure this isn’t the case, regularly remove the pad and clean it by applying dish soap and distilled water. Massage the pad and thoroughly rinse it, followed by a squeeze to remove moisture. Allow it to air-dry overnight before using. It’s worth investing in a few copies of the removable velcro pads so that you can rotate and clean them regularly. The Bottom Line Rotate the pad to gently dry and groom the surface. If visual inspection shows a problem area, spray it again with the G2 fluid, wait a few seconds, and use the pad to gently scrub the area, but only in the direction of the grooves. Seriously dirty records may require 2 or 3 cleanings.

I would advise steering clear of record cleaning kits that contain fluids with high amounts of isopropyl alcohol. While the jury is still out on what level of alcohol (and type) is safe to use in record cleaning fluids, it’s best to steer clear of formulas with very high amounts. G-Sonic Ultrasonic Additive with bulb dropper. (1 oz/30 mL) Makes 60 gallons of G-Sonic treated distilled water.
