Seems a bit of a wasted opportunity to use high speed NVMe drives, limit them to 1 GB/sec each (PCIe 3.0 x1) and then further limit them to 0.5 GB/sec total, through a couple of slow 2.5 Gb Ethernet ports.

The switch to M.2 drives has brought about a complete design rethink. The new model looks more like a games console than a NAS drive thanks to its low profile and angular design. It’s the perfect TV unit shape, but it’s also incredibly light should you need to take it with your for work. I plugged my TrueNAS install USB flash drive into the front of the NAS, and then booted into BIOS by pressing the F2 key repeatedly once the TianoCore splash screen appeared.

The 10GbE port will take one lane, and the dual USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports will take another lane, leaving six lanes for all the M.2 slots (conveniently forgetting the USB 2.0 ports and the S/PDIF).

Not just audible, but with a strangely metallic, nay, ironic quality to the noise it produces. Those multiplexers seem to be the primary means of splitting up PCIe traffic on the 6-bay unit—the N5105 only has 8 PCIe Gen 3 lanes—and supporting two NICs (in the 6-bay unit) or one 10G NIC (in the 12-bay unit) plus all those M.2 slots... you have to mux the traffic. The asking price might appear high, but it is in line with what a twelve-drive NAS SATA device might cost.In the 6-bay unit, the bottom cover comes off using four screws. One nice feature is that the M.2 drives are installed via tool-less carriers.
