And I wanted people to love him – to love somebody who is flawed and to see the beauty in those flaws. i loved the fact that this whole book followed adam’s journey, all his ups & downs, good, bad & ugly, because although this was a work of fiction, julia walton really strived to represent what life was really like for a teenager who has schizophrenia.

Aware that the film is arriving as the world continues to grapple with the pandemic, Freudenthal believes films can be “great generators of empathy” and is hopeful his film will influence everyone to “look at people with schizophrenia without preconceived notions and judgment.” I am not schizophrenic, so I can’t comment on how the illness was handled.
