madeira cake - you can use any plain sweet (unfrosted) cake in trifle. I recommend using either Madeira cake, sponge cake, jam sponge roll or vanilla cake. Reserve one square of the chocolate for decoration and put the rest in a medium heatproof bowl and either melt in a microwave on HIGH for about 1–1½ minutes, or place over a saucepan of gently simmering water. Once almost melted, remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Is it even Christmas without trifle? This is my tried and true recipe for adelicious summer berry trifle that’s made using store bought ingredients. As you look at delicious trifle recipes, you will see that many use flavored gelatin. Those recipes typically have you make gelatin, let it set and cut into cubes to layer.Drain the cherries, reserving the syrup. (If the cherries contain stones, you may wish to stone the cherries at this point, especially if serving children – you can do this by poking with a skewer, halving the cherries and removing the stones, or using a cherry stoner. Otherwise, leave the stones in place and warn people before they begin to eat.) The final layer of your trifle is the cream. For peace of mind, Granny recommends using whipping cream; as it is easier to whip without the risk of over-whipping. However, I tend to find that whipping cream isn’t as readily available, compared to double cream. For that reason, I have listed double cream as a choice too. Both give fabulous results, just be cautious not to over-whip your double cream! (Or use whipping cream if you’re concerned). Add the custard to the melted chocolate and stir well. Transfer to a saucepan and heat very gently, for just 20–30 seconds, stirring constantly until the custard is smooth and glossy. Don’t allow to get too warm. Trifle pudding is a stunning dessert choice as it is bright, colorful, and delicious. It is also very easy to make and is perfect if you have leftover sponge cake. Plus you only need 5 ingredients to make it!

One thing to be aware of when it comes to using fruit in jelly is that some fresh fruits will prevent your jelly from setting; these include fresh pineapple, kiwi and papaya. Using these fruits are part of tinned mixture doesn’t seem to have that effect though…don’t ask me why. In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks together with the sugar and cornstarch. It will be all lovely and yellow. Show-stopping dessert - this dessert may look picture perfect sitting high and mighty on the table in a glass trifle bowl... but don't be fooled! Once this elegant trifle is served, the layers become a deliciously messy feast! You can really customise trifle to your liking and to what you have available to you, but follow the basic thread – cake, soak, fruit, jelly, custard – repeat. The final touch? Clouds of whipped cream.
