Matt ends up living with Richard in York. They get a visit from Fabian, a member of Nexus, who has come to talk to him about a second gate in Peru. Richard doesn't want to go through all this again, but Matt explains he has no choice because he is a Gatekeeper and, as the Old Ones will try to break out again, it is his destiny to stop them when they do. Wasteland Elder: Several such characters appear in the fifth book, after a Time Skip and ten years of war, famine, and Apocalypse Anarchy. Each of these books were gripping. I'm just going to point out that Oblivion came out four years after Necropolis, so it's a very different book compared to the rest. My favourite book out of the first four was definitely Raven's Gate. Because in Raven's Gate, Matthew wasn't the leader of the Five, he wasn't someone with special abilities, he wasn't special or someone to take notice of. In Raven's Gate, he was a criminal sent away on a project to try and help kids with problems like him. He was just a child. Matthew couldn't use his powers in the first book, he barely has control over them throughout the series until the last two. I liked that about him, because he's not your average stupid protagonist that always makes the wrong decisions. Matthew is actually quite clever and does exactly what I would do in that situation. I can actually relate to him.Defector from Decadence: Commander Cain provides an excellent example of this in Oblivion, having an inner monologue describing how America has been falling apart since the Old Ones returned, which is why he didn’t’ hesitate to abandon his official duties and go North to fight them. It's implied that this is also true of most of the other members of the World Army. Alicia decides to seek help from her boss, John Trelawny, who is running for presidency, and manages to convince him about Jamie's powers and to help him get into Silent Creek. Trelawny affirms Jamie's powers and agrees to help him. Jamie is given a false identity and crime and is put into the juvenile Centre. When he arrives, Jamie meets an intake guard named Joe Feather. Jamie manages to discover his brother is there in solitary confinement and Alicia's son Daniel is there too. One night, when he demands that a supervisor named Max Koring take him to his brother, he realizes that his powers do not work in the prison, because of some magnetic field that neutralizes special powers. Koring puts him in solitary confinement for his rudeness and secretly calls Banes to tell him he has found a Gatekeeper. Dan Monnery, Chief Strategy Officer at Northumbria University, said: “We are proud to partner with our fellow northeast universities, working together as anchor institutions to help drive forward the levelling up agenda and grow the region’s economy. It is mentioned that his powers work through his belief in them. This is how he climbed the sword ladder in Necropolis. He can manipulate almost any object with his mind and was able to create energy blasts while fighting the Old Ones in Peru. Good Shepherd: a rarity in the series, but one of the Nexus leaders is a Catholic Bishop, and is dedicated to their cause despite doubting the existence of the Old Ones. Also, Reverend Johnstone, one of the villagers in Oblivion, while a bit of a ditherer, is a kind-hearted man who votes against turning Jamie over to the Dirty Cop.

In Necropolis, many residents of Hong Kong are fleeing the city and refusing to say why as the Old Ones take over. For 0 raised to the 0 power the answer is 1 however this is considered a definition and not an actual calculation. Necropolis: Scarlett is introduced here after being teased in the Nightrise. Scarlett goes on a school trip to an ancient English church for her art class. It is there that she sees an apparition of Matt pass through an unusual door at the end of the hall. She follows him, only to find herself in Ukraine and in the hands of a satanic cult called the Monastery for the Cry for Mercy. She manages to escape, only to be plastered all over the news and revealed to the Nightrise organization, forcing her to head to Hong Kong to figure out Necropolis actually is. Meanwhile, the rest of the Five plan to save her when tragedy strikes, forcing Matt and Jamie to split up from Scott and Pedro and head to England. A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read: Scott and Jamie don't like to read minds for exactly this reason. Considering they're both fourteen and have lived in abusive families for most of their lives, it's understandable.The Triads may smuggle drugs and serve as assassins, but they're not about to let the Old Ones take over the world so easily. Darker and Edgier: While Pentagram was plenty serious and gritty, it was more light-hearted overall, with plenty comedic moments and Richard being a bit of a Butt-Monkey. The Power of Five on the other hand, aims for a much more mature audience.
