About this deal

We celebrated our tenth anniversary with a party for over 400 shareholders and customers, using the event to launch the adventurous Crop Circle, brewed to a complex recipe including malted barley, wheat and maize along with a selection of English and continental hop varieties. For this brew I followed Graham Wheeler’s recipe in his excellent book Brew Your Own British Real Ale, I won’t reproduce the exact recipe here but it’s 100% pale malt with challenger hops for bittering and Goldings for Aroma. Mashing is a simple infusion mash: 90 minutes at 146 degrees F, a little on the low side to maximize fermentability; mash out at 175 degrees F, then sparge. Boil is an hour, with three hop additions. Thank you so much! That will get me started. I did not realise it was so easy. Another favourite of mine is Summer Lightning. If I can reproduce that as well I will be a very happy man.

Success continued in 1996 with a win at the Brewing Industry International Awards for the session beer G.F.B. (Gilbert’s First Brew), claiming Gold Medal both in its class and the overall Championship, beating 232 other cask beers!I think I am the world’s expert on porter beers! I have always liked them, along with stout, even when they were not fashionable. It bothers me how Guinness manages to con so many people with its marketing. There are so many very good stouts available that put Guinness in its place. In this time, we acquired two further pubs, The Sultan in Wimbledon, South London and The Hop Leaf in Reading, both traditional friendly local watering holes. As a result of seeing what is in the FV against the time taken to do it (4.5hrs), I am going to up the stakes and go larger to produce at least double the amount. For the sake of an extra hour or, I can double the amount of beer which in turn means I won't need to brew as often (I say that now though! ) O- Well balanced, very sessionable. Indeed the clean and dry profile would make this a good beer for a refreshing summer's evening.

This recipe is mainly US measurements - I'd prefer UK or metric based recipes - Ideally with all easily UK sourceable ingredients too! I want to brew a 5 gal batch - 4 to go in a corny and the other gallon for bottles) Why pellets - We think pellets are less mess then leaf hops and give better results and last longer with little degradation of the hop This is much more energy-efficient and shortens the time taken to brew. This also means that at peak production times, we can brew more beer in a shorter time-frame – good news all round! Brewery-conditioned summer LightningThis is a All grain mashing kit in the style of Summer Lightning with a little more hops and a little more malt which will give a gold coloured beer with a nice fresh and hoppy aroma with with a strong bitter taste using Golding and Challenger Pellets. This isn’t intended to be a Summer Lightning clone recipe, it’s definitely inspired by it. A crisp, light summer beer that showcases large doses of East Kent Goldings but rather more punchy in the hopping schedule. grams (2 1/2 ounce) Fuggles or Styrian Goldings hops, 5 percent AA, 1 hour 60 grams (2 ounces) East Kent Goldings hops, 5 percent AA, last 5 minutes of boil East Kent Goldings, with their spicy, resinous aromas, have always been the hop of choice for top-grade British beers. Challenger is a much more recently developed variety (1972). With a flavor that's described as fruity, almost scented, with spicy overtones, it's going to fit nicely into our recipe for a contemporary summer ale. Hops grown in the Pacific Northwest of America have strong citrus, stone fruit, melon and piney qualities. With similar fruitiness, the hops of New Zealand and Australia come with more of a tropical lilt. In Germany and the Czech Republic, the classic hops are herbal, floral and grassy, with a bitter citrus depth. In Britain, traditional hops evoke an English garden, with flowers and leaves, stone fruit and berries, wood and spice. Look out, too, for new British varieties such as jester, harlequin, olicana and godiva, which have tropical aromas of passion fruit, pineapple, peach and lime.

Because we use pellets in our beer kit you will require a for the pellets if you have something else that can handle pellets then no need for the bag. This kit will make around 23 ltrs As with all mashing recipes this does depend on your equipment and of course the amount of liquor ( water ) used will also change. We have given mashing guidelines based on our testing and equipment yours may be different.

It's an easy beer to brew, although true excellence depends upon top-flight ingredients. A base of British pale ale malt is the place to start. Maris Otter is generally regarded as the most nuanced in flavor, with light caramel- and nut-like qualities. A dash of pilsner malt will lighten the color and contribute a fresh, bright maltiness. I would use a little bit of unrefined sugar to add crispness without sacrificing character, and top it off with a few percent of wheat malt, which will help your beer settle into a compact, creamy head. There are more than 200 hop varieties, each with its own unique qualities, which in turn are affected by the growing conditions, so the same variety grown in Washington State and Worcestershire will have different accents and aromas. After a 90 Minute boil and late additions of Goldings and a Protofloc Tablet, draining the wort into the cube
