About this deal

All in all, I consider this a successful test, and the paint job on the ONI miniature looks amazing. Almost makes all the exploding paint worth it! Will Army Painter Speedpaint Mega Set 2.0 Improve my Hobby? Let’s take a look at the individual colours. The Speedpaint palette is very similar to the Contrast palette, even though there are only 24 paints (including Speedpaint medium), whereas Contrast has 35. The Army Painter recommend their Matt White Colour Primer, but for better comparison with Contrast I used Greyseer Spray Primer for both models, which is a light grey primer with a satin finish. The smooth satin finish allows the medium of Speedpaints and Contrast paints to spread more evenly. Nevertheless, the many flat areas of the Intercessors’ power armour will present quite a challenge for either paint. Let us know in the comments of our Facebook Hobby Group, or our new Discord server, and make sure you enter the latest monthly giveaway for FREE today! With both Speedpaints and Contrast, you’ll get the best result when you apply them generously, wait a little while for them to settle, and then soak up any excess with a damp brush where too much paint has gathered. This way, the medium can do its job and you’ll get a smoother result and more pronounced shading.

Rob actually found that in his atmospheric conditions of about 50% humidity and a temperature of about 60 degrees the new speed paint dried in about 20 minutes. The new set has a new formula and expanded the line greatly. While this has some colors from the first run, every color has been updated with the new formula. With 23 colors, this really gives you a serious range for your armies. Each one looks amazing, gives insane contrast, and can be slapped on super fast. If you need to get a lot of minis done, or just want more colors, keep your eyes peeled! I have to admit that Contrast has changed my painting quite a bit, even though I never actually use it for painting whole miniatures as advertised. But to save time on organic textures and smaller details like all those pouches and belts that won’t catch your attention, they are fantastic. They’re also great for thinning into washes or glazes. I used Contrast glazes to shade my classic 2nd Edition Ultramarine, for example. From there, you can put a second coat on top. So, just give yourself some time, and you’ll be good to go.

The paint goes on really fast, as you would expect from the name. It also looks to avoid some of the common pitfalls of normal contrast paints. Plus, they are more than 2 dollars cheaper for a bottle than another certain company. Pallid Bone is a bit warmer and softer than Skeleton Horde, Hardened Leather is very similar to Gore-grunta Fur, while Sand Golem is a warm light brown. Dark Wood is like a mix of Wyldwood and Cygor Brown. Crusader Skin is a bit more reddish than Guilliman Flesh. For this, I rubbed the upper half of the bases with a wet cotton swab to take away the paint from the edges, aiming for an easy highlight effect. As you can see, after 30 minutes, yet despite rubbing hard, I could barely get any paint off the edges of the details. Though a slight discolouration was visible on the cotton swabs. In some areas, I was able to scrape off the paint, but that was more due to the mechanical stress. After 2 hours of curing time, there is even less discolouration going on. Except for a few colours like Tyrion Navy. After 24 hours, reactivation is almost a non-issue, though I can still detect minor discolouration for some of the colours. With the resin more stable now, I’m happy to say that the bleed through effect is all but gone. On the lower half of the bases, I painted over with light grey acrylic paint, again after 30 minutes, 2 and 24 hours. Around the 30 minute mark, some of the new Speedpaints still bleed through light layers of paint. For example Dragon Carmaine, Maize Yellow and Forest Spite. It’s much more faint than with the original formula, but it is still present. At least on some of the more vibrant colours such as the red, yellow, purple, and green. However, after a longer curing time of about 2 hours, the bleeding stopped. Speedpaint 2.0 in practical use The first thing to understand is that the latter two paint ranges have a very different formula than Contrast or Speedpaint. They are not based on dye, but on thinned acrylic pigments. Think of Citadel Nihiliakh Oxide or regular acrylic paints thinned with a lot of Contrast Medium. Combined with an innovative resin medium solution that flows perfectly over your miniatures creates an unparalleled painting solution to help you get more time for gaming.

As you can see, there is more of everything, plus 6 brand-new pastel and 10 metallic Speedpaints. I really like all the new greys, browns, and the expanded selection of skintones. Rob is going to see how to use the new paints, what he thinks about them, and basically all the aspects, that way you can decide if they are worth your hard-earned hobby dollars. Let’s go!

Army Painter Speedpaint in Action

It is hard to tell the difference between the two bottles (version one and two) just from the outside. That might make it a little hard for some people to tell what version they have, just something to keep in mind. Do these Reactivate? The NEW Speedpaint 2.0 Starter features a comprehensive collection of the hobby’s favorite one-coat painting solution reformulated to meet the demands of painters of all skill levels. Let’s start with the warm colours. Zealot Yellow is a little more orange than Iyanden Yellow, Fire Giant Orange a little more tomato red. Blood Red and Blood Angels Red are almost identical. Slaughter Red has slightly more prominent highlights, whereas Flesh Tearers Red is a little darker. Purple Alchemy is clearly darker than Volupus Pink and should perhaps be thinned with a little bit of Speedpaint Medium. Hive Dweller Purple is also slightly darker than Shyish Purple, but dries much less patchy. The Most Wanted Paint Set includes all the original 24 Speedpaint colours that were found in the Original Speedpaint Mega Paint Set reformulated for superior speed and performance.

This time, there are three new box sets and even something for retailers! So plenty to sink your teeth into. The Speedpaint Mega Set contains our entire range of Speedpaints giving you 24 colours to work your magic with, and get amazing results faster than ever.To come up with the 2.0 formula, The Army Painter collaborated with some well-known painters from the YouTube community. A brilliant approach to designing products in my opinion. Goobertown Hobbies, Dana Howl, and “Watch it paint it” were asked to provide their input, and even come up with a bunch of new colours themselves. Speedpaint 2.0 contains a more stable acrylic resin which forms a stronger bond. It is promised to no longer reactivate after a curing time of about 2 hours depending on the environment. Which means there should be a time window of at least 2 hours for blending and reactivation. Or shouldn’t it? Spoiler: yes but no. Then, just go to town and just coat the entire thing. It’s really that simple, just put on one actual coat and it does the work for you. No special primers, no thinning, no bullshit. Cleaning The new Speedpaints are initially available in the Mega Paint Set 2.0, which contains 50 paints, out on April 22 in 2023. A complete set and metallic paint set are following soon thereafter. In Summer there will also be a new starter set, and a Most Wanted set, which will have all of the original 24 Speedpaints but with the new formula. The Army Painter is always coming out with some of the coolest hobby products on the market! This time around they are helping us all get our armies and minis done faster but still look great. One of the best things about their paint sets is they always come with great guides, that way if you need help on your scheme, they make it easy. In total, the Speedpaint Mega Set 2.0 features 46 colours, 3 metallics, and 1 Speedpaint Medium – a total of 50 bottles – enabling you to paint beautiful tabletop-quality miniatures in no time! Simply apply one rich coat of Speedpaint directly over a primed miniature and you are done. All colours are using tried and true high-quality heavy pigments.
