About this deal

Mooney used to travel widely to teach. Today, he boards a plane far less often. Yet every year, in the depths of that capricious annual interlude known as Chicago in winter, Mooney departs sunny Southern California to teach at Cello Fest. Carey Cheney, a native of Canada has been teaching and performing for over 25 years. She is a Registered Teacher Trainer of cello for the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and author/recording artist of the series of books and CD’s (eight volumes), Solos For Young Cellists published by Summy-Birchard (Alfred Music Inc.). She holds the degree of Master of Music in Cello Performance with Highest Honors from University of Texas, Austin, where she studied cello and pedagogy with Phyllis Young. She also studied in Germany for 2 years with Andre Navarra. She has had much international teaching and playing experience, in Europe, Canada, Costa Rica, Brazil, Japan, Mexico and New Zealand. She was a guest teacher at the 1999 World Suzuki Conference in Matsumoto, Japan the 2006 World Suzuki Conference in Turin, Italy, taught at the 2008 Hamilton Summer Suzuki String Institute in Rotorua, New Zealand, and at the Festival Los Cedros 2008 in Mexico City. Carey is currently pursuing the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in cello performance, with a minor in musicology at the University of Utah.

differently in the hand). Other new concepts are introduced such as ornaments, triplets, minor keys, and half position. This volume could also be used as a stand alone book to enable a young cello student to become fluid in the first position. The duets between teacher and student also help with ensemble playing. Late Beginning Level Like the Popper, these advanced studies are well-known by cellists. Many of these Caprices are performable as concert pieces. Mooney said he selects music for the choir that the students easily can play, which allows him to focus on refined musical nuances, not technique. Mooney used to lecture all over the world. But each year, Mooney leaves the warm weather of Southern California to give a lecture at Cello Fest amid that unpredictable annual intermission known as Chicago in winter. He does it out of loyalty to his Chicago coworkers and respect for how they have set up their students for success. The cello choir, a group of musicians from Book 4 and higher who do not frequently perform together, is Mooney’s favorite part of the institute. A cello choir resembles other ensembles, like orchestras, in several aspects. However, it also stands out because the cello, a single instrument, can perform every part in every musical register. It's a harrowing tale, but one worth reading before enjoying the acclaimed Netflix series. So now, we get our five-year-olds in cello choir and give them a sense of playing in a big ensemble. And it’s fun. It’s just fun.” continues to develop the young student's ability to read music. It covers fourth finger as tonic, triads in C, F, and G major, dotted quarter notes, songs using second and third fingers, extensions, triads in E-flat, B-flat, and F major, sixteenth notes, alternating between normal and extended finger patterns, double stops, first finger as tonic, triads in A, D, and E major, and pieces in various keys and finger patterns. This volume also begins with a staff that is slightly smaller than the first volume but still larger than the standard printed staff. By the end of this volume the staff is at a standard size. Like the first volume, the second volume probably is more suitable for younger cello students, not older or adult students. Beginning Level When I was in High School my teacher gave me this scale and arpeggio book. It is an excellent resource. Included are scales, broken thirds, arpeggios (tonic, sub-dominant, dominant seventh arpeggios), triad with inversions, thirds in double stops, sixths in double stops, octaves, broken thirds in octaves, octave arpeggios, octave scales, tenths, arpeggios in double stops, scales in chords, chromatic scales, and a scales in natural and artificial harmonics. Whew! What is unique about this scale book is that Yampolsky makes the exercises musically attractive by varying the bowings and rhythms in each key. His work on the SAA Cello Committee over a long period was crucial, both as a contributor to the ongoing development of the books and as the unofficial editor in charge of formatting them for the Committee and Alfred Music.

He studied Suzuki pedagogy with Phyllis Glass at the University of Southern California and later traveled to Japan for further study in 1976. But we wouldn’t do cello choir to the extent that we do if it were not for the fact that it is just so much fun,” Mooney said. “You have the fun of playing different repertoires, different harmonies and being in a big group with colleagues.” A helpful book to take students from second through fourth positions. There is also a section covering half position. Each section begins with a "target practice" to find the position on the fingerboard, using open stings as a reference. Each piece is composed as a duet with an accompaniment part for the teacher, which is great for ensemble playing and intonation. Beginning-Early Intermediate Level
