With the movie only just coming out in theaters, it’s not got a DVD release date just yet. We can look at other movies from the same distribution studio to get an idea, and that’s Lionsgate. We’re looking at Plane and Detective Knight: Independence to get an idea for this latest release. It took the Bruce Willis movie a little more than a month to go from theaters to DVD. Meanwhile, the Gerald Butler movie took two and a half months. We’re potentially looking at the latter for Jesus Revolution, which would suggest we’re looking at sometime around Tuesday, April 25 or Tuesday, May 2 as a release date. Even though I missed this period of history, it spawned some of the most incredible music ever made. The Doors far exceeded anything the Beatles ever did in their early years, singing bland love tunes, but at least it was great that Jim Morrison & co. had their resurgence in the early ’90s when I was at University. In the end, if you are not a faith-oriented viewer looking to drink the film’s Kool-Aid, you might wish a different, secular film-maker was telling this story, able to examine how the Jesus movement intersected with the communal living of the time, and the rise of Christian cults that would lead to the Jonestown massacre and, in a different direction, the megachurches that now dominate Christianity around Los Angeles. In strictly formal terms, this is a well-enough-made work, but one that leaves out huge chunks of relevant detail and is essentially propaganda. It is fascinating as a text, but also richly sinister as it attempts to seduce the viewer with a narrative about redemption and love. Get thee behind me!
