About this deal

This is a compulsory step, especially for garments that you will definitely be washing. You must remove the sizing/ fabric finishes applied to the fabric in its manufacturing process. Otherwise, the paint will not coat all fibers, and when you wash the painted surface, the paint may flake off and show holes where paint should be. So, it is always better to prewash. One of the benefits of using fabric medium is that it allows the acrylic paint to last for longer, and be softer on the fabric. Caring for fabric which has been painted with acrylic paint, but without a medium, takes a little more effort. Wet the fabric lightly with a misting spray bottle. The moisture on the fabric will allow for a more even application of the paint. At Spotlight we have a fantastic range of specialty paints perfect for use on fabric, but painting on fabric is a little different to painting on paper or canvas! Let us guide you on everything you need to know about how to paint fabric, including what kinds of fabric you can paint on, how to paint on fabric and what you need to do to seal your paint afterwards. Flat-tip brushes, also called Shader brushes – These work great for shading and highlighting. You can also use this brush for blending.

Let the paint dry. Depending on the paint type, you may need to set the paint with heat, like with a hairdryer. Finally, some paint pigments do not hold up well to sunlight and will fade over time. I recommend minimizing sun exposure if possible and whether you choose to cover the paint when not in use or just keeping out of the sun altogether, it helps prevent fading. Good news, fabric paint will adhere to just about any fabric surface including cotton, silk, wool, and as well as some synthetics. This is great as it seems just about every fabric out there is a blend. In my experience, I have achieved better results with certain fabrics. I have had the best experience with natural fibers like cotton that are tightly woven. The paint seems to adhere best to cotton and tighter weaves usually have a better visual result due to the paint having more surface to adhere too before seeping through.

What kinds of fabric paint can I find at Spotlight?

You can start with the ratio of 1 part glycerol diluted with water with 5 parts of paint. You can then use more if you need to. Depending on the size and type of the project, choose the right tool to apply paint to the fabric. For decoration work, a paintbrush and a stencil could be the best tools to rely on. If you want to change the colour of a curtain or sofa, a roller can help you finish faster. If you find that you are painting very often, prepare a styrofoam screen on which you can stretch the fabric; this can be attached with pins so that the fabric is somewhat stretched without wrinkles. Foam Brushes: You can use these brushes if you have a large area to be covered. These foam brushes come with a wooden handle.

Use an iron to heat set the paint on the fabric. Do not use any steam settings on your iron, as you want dry heat applied to the paint. Empty the water container on your iron and switch off any steam settings. We were delighted to see all the leaves intact when I removed the top from the washing machine. The non ironed stamped images are just as bright as the heat set ones, so the fabric medium recipe definitely did its job! While most fabric paints are quite hardy once they've dried, some will fade slightly after a few years and many washes. If you're looking for how to paint on fabric permanently, consider using a special sealer or fabric paint medium. If you have large painted fabric that you have no time to heat set with ironing and pressing, use a dryer – the heat in the dryer may set the paint.

But can you use it as an alternative to fabric medium? Since it’s an acrylic paint thinner, a pouring medium should work just as fine as a fabric medium, right? There isn’t much else you can do to extend the life and color of the acrylic paint on medium, you just have to be gentle with the fabric and care for it well. Related Questions Is Acrylic Paint Permanent on Fabric? When you paint on the colored cloth, the problem is that the colors will look faded – you will have to add many layers for it to look somewhat obvious. One easy solution is to paint a layer of white inside the design and then dry the design as you wish on top of it when it is completely dry. This will make it more visible. So, in this case, you will need a lot of white paint – if the design is big. You can get better results while painting on damp fabric because the paint will penetrate deeper into the fibers.

We used our hand printed bags to make some gorgeous herbal bath soaks. Because this DIY fabric paint is so easy to make and use, it’s perfect for kids to use to make gifts for their teachers. Apply the first coat of colour and let it dry to assess the results. Because the fabric is an absorbent material, it may take two or more coats to get a bright finish. Repeat the procedure until you get a satisfactory colour intensity. Iron on the wrong side of your fabric, and avoid ironing directly on the painted side. If this isn’t possible, place a piece of scrap fabric on top of the paint and iron over that. This protects any color transfer and protects the paint from burning.

Most traditional fabric paints need to be fixed with heat so we decided to test if ours did. Once the paint was dry I ironed the bottom half of the T-shirt (the bottom 3 leaves in the picture below), keeping well away from the top – to see how much difference it would make. How to remove acrylic paint from fabric isn't too dissimilar from removing fabric paint. If you have spilled acrylic paint and it's still wet, follow the above steps for wet fabric paint. It should come off easier, as acrylic paint won't penetrate the fibres of your material like fabric paint will.

If you have some acrylic paint sitting at home and you want to get a little creative, you could try using it to paint on fabric.
