About this deal

At 3 oz, it's not a cat food can, and at almost ninety dollars it could be a Garmin 24K DVD shopped well. But it's not, it's delicate on the eyes, easy to figure out after 5 minutes of Rubiks cube work, and a standalone target for envious criticism. With modular capabilities from simmer to rip, (do experiment with configs), it puts out enough for two hip campers easily, or more. I'm taking it on the CDT for the occasional* sponge bath. The design of it is kind of neat. It has two sets of jetting holes, at the top ring and then the "shoulder", or the "outer shelf", however you feel like describing it. Once you light the inner alcohol, the gas escaping out of the upper holes ignites, and then lights the gas escaping from the jets on the outer shelf. Relatively clean fuel can be stored in a plastic bottle. More can be carried as and when it’s needed. The shorter time to achieve a boil, the more efficient your stove, meaning you need to carry less fuel. Alcohol stoves that hold a flame longer mean you can heat more water, great if cooking for multiple people. Adding a windscreen to your setup helps funnel more heat to the stove. Open flame stoves are the least efficient, side or vertical stoves are better, and pressure flame stoves are the most efficient. If you’re torn between a larger stovetop cooking system or compact stoves such as a Trangia spirit burner, it really comes down to budget vs goals.

Whether you’re an experienced camper, or on your first outdoor adventure, you do not want to be caught short when it comes to your equipment. What’s Your Stove For? Long distance or Family Camping? As for the price: you only pay once, and use the thing perhaps hundreds of times, long after the price is forgotten. Or else you learn that it is not for you, and you may call that an expensive lesson or a cheap one. I call it cheap and resume the search. Yes, it is very light, but for gram counters there is even lighter. Just the titanium burner with an Evernew trivet and a simple homemade wind shield would be a better cheaper option. Typical prices of alcohol stoves will vary depending on the type of product you require, So researching the basics will aid you in purchasing the perfect cooking system. It will burn dry twigs fairly efficiently, but it has a small combustion chamber and you need to almost watch it boiling to keep it fueled. It is also a bit hard to use a second windscreen in this mode as you need to keep space to feed wood but not set fire to any fixed pot handles. Stoves were tested in tandem to gauge how fast (and long) they were able to boil water. I used 50 milliliters of denatured alcohol in each stove for my test, supplemented by an inverted stove stand (to accommodate the wide base of the Vargo Decagon) and a homemade windscreen.

Its flexible too, so even if fuel is hard to get you could always burn wood, though this is fiddly on this particular stove. Carrying Whether you are doing a short day walk or you are looking to do a longer expedition for a few days, the load carrying kit that you use to transport all your other gear can be the difference between making it to the end and cutting your trip short. Read More Titanium stoves are a heavier option but they offer an even more durable stove top with better stability. If you’re looking for a multi fuel stove that burns longer, titanium would be your best bet as it lasts significantly longer and is resistant to corrosion, resulting in a longer lifespan. The concept here is pretty simple: just clean out a cat food can and then drill or punch holes in it around the rim of the lid. The classic can to use for this is Fancy Feast (due to its comparatively small size and low price), with a single or double layer of holes punched in around the top of the lid (more holes equals greater weight savings but less fuel capacity). During testing, I drilled in a single layer of holes without incident but found the structure of the can became too flimsy after this to continue to drill in the second layer of holes.Waterproof Camping Gear & Kit Repairs At Wood To Water, we consider keeping your kit dry and usable one of the most important things when out on the trail. Read More You can choose to use denatured alcohol liquid fuel or solid tablets as you need, and the stand ensures great heat distribution and fuel use efficiency too. Okay, it certainly is expensive. If you calculate the difference between conventional gear and titanium gear and price your ounces saved, you will understand that air has become the most expensive commodity in the outdoor world. If you want the flexibility of cooking with twigs or Meths then this Evernew set is about the lightest option available weighing 3oz in total its an amazingly light and compact system. The burner itself is very high quality with fuel capacity graduations to make it easy to fill to the correct level. I have twice boiled water using pine twigs (once in rain)—it was easy and relatively fast, but messy.

This titanium stove has plenty of jetting holes to create the most effective flame for cooking. It’s perfect to pair to most stand since it’s properly sized. It produces a stable jet flame and can boil 2 cups of water in 6 minutes (mid-high elevation). There’s a huge center opening on this stove if you notice, that’s because this stove also accommodates solid fuels to work. Get this stove for more effective cooking! Read More >> The pot holder assembly comes with a "Power Plate", which sounds magnificent and intense, but other folks' tests largely show that it prolongs boil times. It's basically a heat sink and flame disperser. I always use it because the instructions said so, but perhaps I'll try leaving it off. In solid fuel (any type) mode, this piece is the base of the assembly. The Power Plate component warped slightly with early use and stayed that way, but this is the nature of thin metal and it seems designed to accommodate this change. I store the system within the 500mL pot with a Chux wipe wrapped around to stop it rattling (double duty as pot cleaner). The pot stand assembly took a bit of playing to initially determine the setup options and intentions for each fuel type, but I could set it up in a flash after a bit of reading and a play. In four years and countless hundred uses, the stove still always fits together beautifully and has not deformed or degraded in any way. The blue discolouration is beautiful, though mine has been used so much it's much darker than it used to be; the patina anyway has been wonderful to watch develop and a nice marker of the time I've spent relying on this stove in the wilderness.

The bad is that it took longer to reach a boil than the Trangia, and significantly longer than the titanium models. Its fabrication is also flimsier than other versions I looked at, easily bending under pressure. But if you don’t mind treating your gear gingerly (and there is no reason an alcohol stove should take a particular beating), then this one will work just fine in most settings. You can make a windscreen for an alcohol stove with aluminum foil. Cut a piece to the length you need to wrap around your pot and double the height. Fold it in half, then wrap it around the base of your pot to keep the wind from blowing out your alcohol stove. The only situation where I can see it being of any real use is above the snow line as getting the stove set up with cold hands should be simple enough. Just make sure the fuel to be used has been prewarmed. One advantage of this design is that you don’t need a pot stand, which helps you to save weight further, as the holes in the side give the fuel enough oxygen to burn on without it. (During testing, I also found that it was considerably more efficient without it.) But the best part? This stove does a great job of boiling water—as good or better than the rest of the alcohol stoves in my test. Things to Consider Before Buying an Alcohol Stove
