About this deal

An update to the traditional alcohol burner style all-in-one camping stove, this stylish, super light design from Primus comes with a small but mighty 2000W piezo controlled gas burner that can boil a litre of water in just four minutes. How many people will I be cooking for? If you're a large party and only have one cooker, you'll probably need more than one burner. This means a compact stove won't be much use as they rarely have more than one burner. Plus you might struggle to cook using big pots. There were one or two slow models, but most of the stoves got the kettle whistling after around five minutes. Although it's convenient to have a speedy stove, you'll likely find most camping stoves heat at a similar pace once the flames get going. The gas regulators on these stoves were small and didn't take much turning to adjust the power of the stove significantly. A slight touch made the flame go from powerful to very powerful.

Most stoves use either canisters of gas (propane, butane or a mix of the two) or liquid fuel (such as kerosene or paraffin). Gas canisters usually clip or screw onto the stove. They’re small, lightweight and don’t leak. Often, stoves are only compatible with one kind of fuel or brand, so always ensure you buy the right fuel canister for your particular stove. There are exceptions, however. The Campingaz Camp Bistro 2 and the Kemper Camping Stove Xtra Smart are medium-sized but only have a single burner – so they're a compromise between the portability of the compact stove and the familiar cooking experience of a larger one. Steer clear of the double-canister Popamazing stoves – a fault on the connection could make them dangerous. Also, don’t bother with the Campingaz Bistro 300 – very low on gas power and the plastic parts melt far too easily. The boil time and cook time is slower than single burner stoves such as the OEX Etna mini stove and the Coleman Fyrelite but for some reason, I don't feel as rushed cooking on these types of stoves so it really doesn't bother me and I enjoy the process more. The adjustable flame worked well so there wasn't any issues with hot spots and burnt eggs but it did take it's time for a cup of tea. Campingaz Bistro Stove with the OEX Grouppa Cookware Set We cooked eggs and sausages using the same pan on every stove we tested, scoring each on how user-friendly and comfortable they were to use. Heat-up speedLarger, heavier camping stoves with several burners and a design that's more similar to your home cooker.

Ideal for festivals and best suited for one-pot cooking recipes, you can take everything in a very compact, surprisingly light case without compromising on cooking performance.Although you can get standard gas hob-style flames, there are camping stoves available that have welding-style flames with intense heat and an audible roar. The rectangular metal base (it's about 30cm wide) means the Bistro 2 is sturdy and, unlike many single burners, there's no chance of it falling over. It can take a pan up to 26cm and the enamelled pan support feels solid and durable. It's certainly something you can cook on with confidence.

The Bistro Elite, like many of its counterparts in this range, does suffer in windy conditions as the burner ring sits up from the stove so wind can easily catch the flame. Using a windbreak shield or cooking in shetlered areas would help this. Can I use the Bistro Elite in extreme cold conditions? The stoves we tested with this type of flame burnt the hottest, were great at heating up pans and proved much more resistant to wind interference than standard burners. Campingaz make the Bistro. And there are lots of other brands that are nigh-on identical. There are also a lot of very cheap and potentially dangerous variants. Our main gripe is with the windshield/lid, which is held in place by one very small catch that slips into a tiny groove. Why they didn’t put one on the other side to make the lid less wobbly, we’ve no idea. It tends to give the cooker an unstable feel.
