They can also be combined with other vegetables such as cut-and-come-again lettuce or bushy, trailing tomatoes. Watering Known to some as the first European to explore the upper Mississippi, and widely as the namesake of ships and hotel chains, Pierre-Esprit Radisson is perhaps best described, writes Mark Bourrie, as “an eager hustler with no known scruples.” Kidnapped by Mohawk warriors at the age of fifteen, Radisson assimilated and was adopted by a powerful family, only to escape to New York City after less than a year. After being recaptured, he defected from a raiding party to the Dutch and crossed the Atlantic to Holland—thus beginning a lifetime of seized opportunities and frustrated ambitions. Mark Bourrie’s “Bush Runner: The Adventures of Pierre-Esprit Radisson” is a delightful biography of not only the man at the centre of the book, but also of the unromantic forces that shaped early European colonial exploitation of what is now Canada. It is at its best when the charismatic rogue is himself in the spotlight, fading only slightly as larger political forces sideline Radisson. Known to some as the first European to explore the upper Mississippi, and widely as the namesake of ships and hotel chains, Pierre-Esprit Radisson is perhaps best described, writes Mark Bourrie, as "an eager hustler with no known scruples." Kidnapped by Mohawk warriors at the age of fifteen, Radisson assimilated and was adopted by a powerful family, only to escape to New York City after less than a year. After being recaptured, he defected from a raiding party to the Dutch and crossed the Atlantic to Holland — thus beginning a lifetime of seized opportunities and frustrated ambitions. Bourrie’s writing is grounded in a strong sense of place, partly because of his own extensive knowledge of the land and partly because of Radisson’s descriptive storytelling a

If you are ever struggling with care for either though, the treatment of broad beans and bush beans is nearly identical. Can you get bush runner beans? Climbing beans can be combined with lighter growing sweet peas such as the old-fashioned ‘Cupani’ to make them even more attractive. The scarlet blooms of a red-flowered bean make a striking combination with the rich purple flowers of the sweet pea. He's the Forrest Gump of his time. He's everywhere. And because he could read and write, he managed to tell us about it," Mark Bourrie writes in "Bush Runner: The Adventures of Pierre-Esprit Radisson," an engaging biography of this "eager hustler with no known scruples." Two problems. One is we don't have any readers anymore who are reading researched Canadian non-fiction. And the second problem is there is not a lot of support for it.

Say I wanted to write a book about what's happening in the Arctic and I have friends in the Arctic. They're all telling me that climate change is so obvious. It's just crazy up there. But there used to be these giant magazines that were in weekend newspapers, and Saturday night city magazines, Toronto Life. And that part of the media has withered along with other print media like newspapers. The stories told about him in this book shows him double-crossing everyone, especially the French, English, and Mohawks. He probably felt he had no choice and he probably didn’t. He is an interesting character who was in North America, Caribbean, France, Holland, and Britain. It is surprising how many times he went from the New World to the Old World and how much he travelled around the New World considering how long these journeys took and how fraught with danger they were. Euonymus alatus‘Fireball’: Here, too, the name says it all, because the growth of the variety ‘Fireball’ is spherical. The shrub grows up to 3 metres high and almost as wide. However, it is very slow to reach these dimensions, as ‘Fireball’, like the species, grows very slowly, by about 10 to 20 cm per year.

Then the Iroquois did something that Bourrie believes may be unique in New France: they adopted him into their society. Red Rum’ is a popular choice because it is self-fertile and less dependent on pollinating insects. ‘Painted Lady’ is one of the most attractive with red and white showy flowers. It was announced in November that 2020 will be the last year for the prize, which has been given out since 2000. Beans need warm temperatures to germinate and grow, so you can sow them much later than many other vegetables. It’s never worth starting before late spring if sowing outdoors. In colder areas start them indoors and plant out after danger of frost has passed. Situation

It’s never ideal to plant similar plants together as they compete for nutrients, but as long as they are planted well apart from one another, planting bush and pole beans can work well. The benefit of planting bush and pole beans together is that one bed will give staggered crops. Do bush beans need trellis? It's Canadian non-fiction. Unlike other media, the book business is still doing really well. Even the non-fiction side of the book business is doing quite well. Taylor created the prize in memory of her husband, Charles Taylor, a journalist and author of the books Six Journeys and Radical Tories. He died in 1997. Bourrie has written several books about history. His other books include The Killing Game, a book about ISIS, Fighting Words, about Canadian war reporting, and The Fog of War, about media censorship during the Second World War. Bush beans and pole beans are great crops for gardeners that love continuous harvests, but choosing between the two might be tougher than you think. You won the [final] RBC Taylor Prize for literary non-fiction for Bush Runner in 2020.... And the people behind that prize said that literary non-fiction is a genre that is now developed into a major component of Canadian publishing, inferring that it's flourishing. Do they see something that you don't see or vice versa? Bush beans are faster to crop, but produce lower yields, while pole beans can take up to sixteen weeks to begin cropping, and go on cropping for longer into fall. The bush runner bean ‘Hestia’ is deservedly popular for patio pots. It is free-flowering and showy with red and pink flowers and a plentiful crop of beans. Pierre-Esprit Radisson came to New France (modern Québec) as a young boy with little expected of him. Intelligent—if not necessarily learned—and charismatic, he was by nature a survivor with fluid loyalties. Based largely on Radisson’s journals, the book follows a life that moves in Indigenous communities (as a prisoner, as an adopted family member, and as a trader) and takes on dangerous and unsanctioned fur trading missions in his early years, eventually arriving in the courts of King Louis XIV of France and Charles II of England and laying the foundation for a massive fur trading enterprise in Hudson’s Bay (first for the French and then for the English). He was, as the author notes in his introduction, everywhere “a time traveller to the 1600s would want to see”. The is a podcast interviewing Mark Bourrie on CBC if you do not mind podcasts. Not a bad interview, but podcasts are not my favourite media. Mark Bourrie is interviewed on the Morning Show on Global News.
