BTEC National diplomas - from Level 3 (a similar standard to having studied three A-levels or a T Level). However, they can also be taken alongside other academic qualifications such as A-levels or as part of an apprenticeship. What level is a BTEC? Btecs are increasingly becoming a more popular path to both university and particular jobs in place of – or in addition to – A-levels. Standing for the Business and Technology Education Council, BTECs are specialist vocational qualifications you can study at school or college. These flexible work-related courses bring together subject theory with practical learning. Along with the raft of new T Levels, BTEC National diplomas provide a viable alternative to A-levels, although you can also choose to study A-levels at the same time as completing this BTEC qualification. They're best suited to those with an interest in a specific industry but haven't yet settled on a particular role.

Can you get into university if you’re studying Btecs?
The BTEC First Diploma is a vocational qualification at Level 2. It is the equivalent of 4 GCSE grades A*-C. BTEC Nationalsareavailable from Level 3 (similar standard to A levels).Many of these are well regarded by universities, further education colleges, and employers. A BTEC National qualification can lead to employment, continuing study, orprofessional development programmes.
On successful completion of a BTEC National qualification, students can progress to employment or continue their learning in the same or related areas of study, in higher educationand professional development programmes. Future-proofing: if university is in your sights post-Btecs, think about what you may want to study at degree level, as this will impact what you choose at the Btec stage. They can be studied at various levels, each of which equates to a different qualification: Subjects you can study: although we've pointed out above that you may be surprised by the range of subjects on offer at Btec level, there is still a strong understanding that Btecs lend themselves more to subjects with a practical nature. Therefore subjects which are firmly rooted in theory and concepts – such as English or maths – will only be available at A-levels.
There isa range of optional units to choose from which enable students to focus on particular interests and plans they have for next steps into further study, an apprenticeship, or employment. Students are assessed through a number of written and activity-based assignments. For instance, if the BTEC was related to the creative arts and design sector this could be in the form of an individual/group dance or acting performance. BTEC qualifications are flexible–you can take one alongside (or instead of) GCSEs and A levels in schools and colleges. They’re also usually studied full-time,either in college or jointly between a school and a college. Teaching style: if you study A-levels, you'll be taught in a similar manner to how you've been used to throughout your secondary education. Btecs are slightly different in that theory is combined with regular practical work so you can directly apply what you learn. In previous years, some students doubted Btecs because of their more vocational and less academic nature. But this narrative has shifted, as more and more young people see Btecs as the right fit for their interests and aspirations.

The course involves a series of assignments which can be written or activity-based, for examplecreating a film clip, planning and putting on a performance, or creating a business plan. Students complete some assignments individually and some as part of a team.For some BTEC courses, students can also apply their knowledge and skills through work experience. While they are commonly known as an alternative to A-levels, Btec qualifications can actually be studied at a number of levels including GCSE and even degree-level. For one, you’ll probably be in a class of fewer students, meaning your contribution to lessons will be more important. You’ll also likely have fewer classes – so you’ll have more time to stay on top of coursework during your free periods.

The usual entry requirements consist of a mix of GCSE subject passes at grades D-G or better. Equivalent entry qualifications are also commonly accepted, including an appropriate BTEC Introductory Diploma with a merit grade or higher. Four years ago the Government changed the GCSE grading system from A* to G to a numerical system of 9 to 1 (9 being the top grade and 1 being the lowest). BTECs are divided into units, which cover specific areas of knowledge, skills, and understanding required by the particular sector or industry. If taken as a standalone course, a BTEC will typically take one to two years to complete, depending on whether you choose to study full or part time.You might also be thinking about your future a bit more. If you want to go on to university, you’ll need to handle choosing a degree subject, completing your Ucas application and going to open days or university interviews alongside your studies. Btecs provide the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a field or subject. They're an alternative to the more theory-focused, classroom-based ways of learning which you might be put off by. Since 2017, GCSEs have operated a numerical rather than letter-based system, which adds a complicating factor to comparing BTec grades.
