About this deal

You can get away with not using pond gravel at the bottom of a container pond. Your potted aquatic plants should come with gravel on top to keep the soil and roots in place. Half whiskey barrel planters are too small for Koi fish, but that’s okay because there are a few types of goldfish that look just like Koi but smaller.

Keep in mind that the larger the barrel, the heavier it will be. This is particularly true for wooden barrels. Plastic barrels are significantly lighter than wooden barrels, no matter their size. By not having holes already in place, there is also the option of using this planter as a small water feature. It has a 22 L capacity and the plastic is completely watertight making for an inexpensive solution to get an ornamental pond in the garden.

The Middlesized Garden Beautiful Borders Planning Checklist

While choosing plants, I recommend looking for UK and European natives. These plants can handle our fluctuating temperatures, so they will survive the UK’s hardest frosts and hot summer days. In light of this, we chose: It’s made from solid oak, resulting in a fully rustic appearance, with metal bands around the wooden slats to hold it all together. Despite looking like part of a wooden barrel, this planter is in fact made from recycled plastic. It therefore has the charm of a traditional planter, but can be left outside all year round without the fear of applying waterproofing treatments or dealing with wood rot.

If you are in a very cold area or anticipate a cold spell of weather wrap the container in fleece or bubble wrap for protection or drop a 'pop up' greenhouse over the whole mini pond. Depending on the age of the wooden barrel, the rusticity of its appearance can vary. Some look relatively new, whilst others have been darkened by age or show signs of rust on the metal rings holding them together. To some, this is aesthetically desirable, but others may prefer the structural reassurance of no visible rust.Nothing else seemed simple, however. I initially felt overwhelmed by the amount of contradictory information out there. I have, I hope, simplified it for you. Where to place your mini wildlife pond Finally, float a handful of azolla over the surface. In full sun, this lacy-leaved plant turns bright red, so adding to the appeal. Buying and growing a lotus plant in containers is relatively easy and very worth the effort. Lotus plants are more cold hardy than some people realize. They will thrive up to USDA plant zone 5 (Chicago is in zone 5). I don't know what barrels are treated with before the whiskey goes in so there is the possibility of chemical residue leaching from the wood. I think it's a personal choice as to whether you add a liner, sealant or just a good scrub out. Sealant will degrade over time too, so need replacing. If you just want plants to make a water feature then it probably doesn't matter about the liner. Creating a half-barrel pond is a rewarding and eco-friendly project that can transform your garden into a thriving habitat for various forms of wildlife. While it may seem like a small endeavour, it can have a significant impact on the local biodiversity and provide a peaceful oasis for you to enjoy.
