About this deal

We have outlined the major benefits of priming (or undercoating), and when (and where) you may need to use a specific product. We’ve also given you a link to some of our tried and trusted “priming” products to help you make the right choice, and you can find our full range of “primers” here. When do I need a “primer” for internal walls/ceilings?

Coo-Var Alkali Resisting Primer Sealer is ideal as a high quality primer prior to painting. It is resistant to solvents and salts, is excellent on walls and plaster with easy application, and is also ideal for use on walls and plaster. In exterior situations, scrape or sand substrate to remove wrinkled paint and repaint with a high quality exterior finish. Applying paint on a surface or coating which already has mildew or from which mildew has not been completely removed This can cause a headache for both walls and woodwork. If the previous colour was dark, this has can ‘grin’ through the new pale finish, meaning you may need an extra coat or two. This can be avoided by obliterating the dark shade using an undercoat on woodwork and a coat of a pale Matt wall paint on the walls. Of course, this also works if you are painting over a pale shard with a dark one, you just use a dark undercoat/matt instead.

Colour Guides

Remove sources of moisture. Repair loose caulk and install vents and exhaust fans wherever possible. Surfaces that are already painted and in good condition can simply be over coated (after cleaning and a light sand). Always use matt paint as an “undercoat” if there is a dramatic colour change, even if you are finishing with soft sheen or silk. Application: Brush only. For Health and Safety reasons related to all solvent-based paints, spray application is not recommended. STIR THOROUGHLY BEFORE USE. After suitable surface preparation, apply 1 coat of Dulux Trade Alkali Resisting Primer to bare or stained surfaces.Finish with an appropriate Dulux Trade paint system To ensure fair pricing, we split colours into ‘Price Bands’ to group together similar priced colours. If you wish to search for the cheapest tinted colours, always select Price Band 1. Uneven paint drying – paint film dries faster on top if you paint when it’s either very hot, or cold and damp

The main benefit of a primer is to even out the porosity of the surface and ensure optimum adhesion so that you get the best possible results from your paint system, but other features might include stabilising a powdery surface or helping to prevent stains ruining your decoration. The terms often get mixed up and depending on where you are in the UK, you might use alternative terms. Just to confuse matters further, we also have primer/undercoats and primer/sealers, which do both jobs! Remove wrinkled coating before repainting by scraping or sanding substrate. Apply primer and allow it to dry completely before applying the top coat Thoroughly remove all dirt or organic matter on which mildew can feed. Use a power washer if necessary.Primers are used on bare surfaces (e.g. wood and metal) and are usually white or off-white, sealers are used on plaster or masonry and are normally clear or only lightly pigmented, and undercoats (sometimes called mid-coats) are used onto coated (primed or painted) surfaces and are always pigmented. Colours are sold in the nearest tin size but actual paint volume per tin may vary up to 10% depending on colour As dictated by normal good painting practice. Care must be taken during application that the temperature is above the dew point to avoid any contamination. In confined spaces, provide adequate ventilation during application and drying. These bubble-like appearances are caused by blistering, which happens when certain areas lose adhesion, forcing the paint film to lift from the surface. What are the possible causes? To find Ready Mixed colours, search "ready mixed" or select the Ready Mixed 'colour chart'. To see Tinted colours select a colour chart such as RAL, BS, NCS, etc. or search for a colour/hue to see available or related options.

The easy answer would be “always”, particularly on bare surfaces, but of course it’s not that simple.Bare plaster that is drying out should be coated with a breathable finish such as Dulux Trade Supermatt. High humidity and moisture in spaces such as bathrooms, kitchens and laundry areas encourage microbial growth

These are stipple marks unintentionally caused by the roller, mainly because of wrong painting techniques and poor equipment. What are the possible causes? Scrub the entire mildewed area with a solution of one part bleach and three parts water – clean till all mildew is gone. Use rubber gloves and eye protection. Confirm that the problem is indeed mildew by applying a few drops of bleach. If it whitens, it is likely to be mildew. This primer improves paint durability and minimises the number of coats needed, significantly reducing costs. It is best suited for residential, hospitality, education, and healthcare walls.

Wrinkling is when a painted surface looks rough and crinkled, which usually occurs when uncured paint forms a skin. What are the possible causes? Remove all loose and flaking paint with a scraper or wire brush before repainting. Also sand and feather the edges. For exterior masonry, surfaces can variously have a high pH level (alkaline), be chalky/powdery, or staining, which can cause adhesion problems and discolouration of the finish. While in most cases, if the surface is sound and dry, there is no need for a primer, but when you need one – use one.
