About this deal

For the label design, Cargill hired a London agency led by Joseph MacNulty. After hearing the story of Cargill chasing the old recipe, he came up with the idea of naming the liqueur after Cargill's aunt. -And aunt marybecame Tia Maria. Today's marketing version This drink is so basic, but it’s so good. All you do is spike a cup of hot chocolate (as much or as little as you want) with Tia Maria. You’ll feel like a kid again, but there will be an adult secret indide: coffee liqueur! 7. Espresso Martini Tia Maria is a Jamaican coffee liqueur that is made with 100% Arabica beans, vanilla, rum, and sugar ( 3). While the Jamaican rum provides depth and body, vanilla adds warmth, and the coffee beans bring the coffee liqueur to a crescendo of roasted coffee notes. Putting Together the Tia Maria Coffee Recipe However, the recipe changed over time, as did the alcohol content. The original version contained 31.5% of alcohol, whereas t oday's version only contains 20%. Even the place of production changed. These days, the Jamaican coffee liqueur is produced in Italy and no longer in Jamaica. What's in Tia Maria? Tia Maria is made from premium Jamaican coffee beans and a blend of Jamaican rum, vanilla, and sugar.

In his book Jamaican Farewell, Morris Cargill tells a story in which he tries to make a coffee-based liqueur his aunt had once made. Failing to get a hold of the original recipe, he collaborated with Dr. Kenneth Leigh Evans, who then developed a working recipe in 1946 ( 2). From there, they brewed their first mass-produced batch of Tia Maria in collaboration with Myers’s Rum, Desnoes & Geddes, and Keble Munn. What Is Tia Maria Liqueur?

Tia Maria is a dark coffee liqueur made in Italy using Jamaican coffee beans. The main ingredients are coffee beans, Jamaican rum, vanilla, and sugar, blended to an alcoholic content of 20%. Tia Maria is like Kahlua, but better! Take a sip and you’ll get a nuance in flavor that’s not present in the more straightforward Kahlua. Notes of caramel, citrus and vanilla swirl into the bittersweet coffee. It makes a killer Espresso Martini and a next-level White Russian. How much does it cost? Morris Cargill, a Jamaican lawyer, and businessman, states in his book Jamaica Farewellthat he had the idea of making a coffee liqueur similar to the one his aunt used to make.

Since Tia Maria is similar to Kahlúa coffee liqueur, it's an excellent replacement in mixed drink recipes.

Good to know

Of all the brands making a big push into new markets, the last I would have thought of was Tia Maria, a coffee liqueur developed in Jamaica in the 1940s. The brand was recently sold to Saronno, and it’s currently made in Italy. Recently the brand added two new expressions, one built around matcha tea of all things, and the other a ready-to-drink coffee concoction. Tia Maria is a high-quality coffee liqueurproduced by a company with the same name. The liqueur was invented in the 1940s and initially manufactured in Jamaica. The original recipe is made from Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, Jamaican rum, bourbon vanilla, and sugar.

Just about every kind of alcohol pairs well with cola. It’s no different with Tia Maria. This drink tastes great and also gives you that extra jolt of caffeine. You can add a slice of lime for an extra twist. 4. White Russian The difference in consistency is mainly due to one key ingredient in Tia Maria. It uses cold brew extract instead of roasted coffee beans. This extract makes for a more watery consistency and a better-balanced coffee taste with less bitter notes. That, in turn, means that Tia Maria requires less sugar to balance out bitter notes. Tia Mariais a coffee liqueur invented in Jamaica in the 1940’s, made with Arabica coffee, Jamaican rum, bourbon vanilla and sugar. It was manufactured in Jamaica until it was bought in 2005 by the Pernod Ricardcompany. It’s now manufactured in Italy. The original version of Tia Maria has established itself as a premium liqueur at 31.5% ABV. In the 1980s, the formula of the liqueur changed, and since then, the resulting product only contains 20% ABV. If you’re a fan of chocolate vodka, you might want to try giving that version a try to create a chocolate espresso martini. Now that I’m thinking about it, I might have to go try that right now! The former, original recipe was significantly boozier with an alcohol content of 31.5%. The ingredients were also slightly different, as the liqueur was made from Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans and genuine bourbon vanilla. The taste of Tia Maria

Unable to get a hand on the original recipe, he connected with Dr. Ken Evans to develop a recipe coming as close to Cargill's memories as possible. If you ask coffee liqueur connoisseurs where Tia Maria liqueur came from, you’ll probably hear some variation. Between 1655 and 1672, the British and Spanish fought over Jamaica, vying for control over the country and its resources ( 1). We recently got the entire lineup of Tia Maria products to taste, which we will attend to presently.
