The Secret History of Twin Peaks forgoes traditional comic book visual grammar for a less intrusive scrapbook aesthetic which is easier for the target reader to put their faith in, and a mature variation on the photo-document grammar of conspiracy theory nonfiction and pop histories. There are little things in the book that simply don’t work when compared to the show, but those could easily be oversights, or even minor retcons for storytelling clarity. Yet some of these larger incongruities are so noticeable and grievous that, for any well-attuned fan, it’s bound to briefly take the reader out of the story.

Fire Walk With Me opens with blue, as it brings us through the snow on a tv screen to the world of Twin Peaks. The archivist's "faithful Corona" does not have a * key even though he typed this symbol several times, including under this very picture. Other symbols such as the # and “ ” marks are also not on the depicted corona, which appears to be a 1939 Corona Standard with a German QWERTZ keyboard. While Corona has produced QWERTZ typewriters, those in the Standard series are uncommon if they ever even existed.

It’s unclear if Frost changed his mind about the direction of the novel, or if in reality most of the advance description was largely hype written by a publicist. But either way, those reading the book for a thorough follow-up on the show’s controversial finale are bound to be disappointed. But if it is intentional, why? What’s the point of rewriting or ignoring what was previously established? (And for a show which made a name for itself by demanding that viewers pay close attention to details, no less).

But for all the significant new insights into the mythology of Twin Peaks, the book would simply be an exercise in world-building if it did not also include some glimpses into the lives of the many characters we’ve come to know and love. To say Twin Peaks has a large cast would be an understatement, so it’s simply not possible for the novel to service all or even most of them, but the character work that does make it into the book is uniformly excellent. The red spectrum slightly suppresses activity in the left or logical hemisphere, while the blue spectrum does the same in the spatial/intuitive side of the brain and that when worn together — although it does tend to give ‘reality’ a slightly purple tint — the patient tends to experience increased integration between the two spheres by … encouraging the two sides to work together.” A vague and slippery answer, to be sure, and one that could easily be interpreted as “Hey it’s been 25 years I can’t remember everything please leave me alone!” But it’s also cryptic enough to suggest that what look like errors are anything but. As a result, this places Josie's death before that of Leland Palmer and Douglas Milford, the latter of which appears to be unchanged (the former is not mentioned in the book). This is sequentially incorrect in terms of the series.
