Cordless tyre inflator, ideal for camping and road trips. The RTC6000 digital tyre inflator can inflate a tyre in just two minutes. Comes with air compressor setting for tyres, and air pump setting for air beds. Can inflate a single airbed in just two minutes. The RTC4000 has a digital autostop feature that will automatically stopinflating the tyre when the desired pressure is reached. The inbuilt memoryfunction allows you to store up to 4 tyre pressures in either PSI BAR orkPA. Should you have too much air in the tyre there is a deflator valve thatallows you to accurately achieve the pressure you require. Some inflators have 12V ports so they can effectively be used as an extension lead that connects other accessories to your car’s power. If your car isn’t fitted with a USB port, it’s useful to have a tyre inflator with this feature so that you can charge a tablet or smartphone on the road. Finally we tried it on a few flat footballs and a basketball, using the attachment which cleverly slots in the base. Again it was simple to use and fast to inflate - a handy thing to have for when the kids decide they want to play football there and then. Over the time we've used it, we found it has kept its charge well, even when sat in the boot of the car for a few months.
Given most people are used to tyre inflators being the size of a kids lunchbox with wires and cables, this small handlheld design might come as a surprise. It's about the size of a standard 50cl bottle of water and not much different in weight either. To charge it up took about three hours when it first arrived and since then we've been charging it up between uses. We timed how long it took to inflate a 15-inch tyre from 20-30psi, noting the pressures displayed before and after, plus the ambient and working noise levels. We also timed adding 5psi to a space-saver tyre, to bring it up to 60psi. Once the desired pressure is reached, the inflator automatically stops. The most common units – psi – have one decimal place on the display, but it will only show in increments of 0.5.

In the box you get the inflator as well as a carrying bag and a bottle cage attachment so you can carry it on your bike. The unit is charged via a standard USB cable that's supplied. If you want to be equipped for every flat tyre eventuality, the VonHaus Cordless Tyre Inflator has you covered. It will run for up to ten minutes from the supplied 1.5A lithium-ion battery, but if you forget to charge it you can always switch to the bundled 12V adaptor, which comes with an unusually generous 3.5m cable. It has a small, but still readable, digital pressure meter. And you can just set your desired pressure, pull the trigger and let it go to work: it will stop when it reaches the right level.

To use them, simply remove the dust cap from the valve on the tyre and push the end of the air hose over it, before pressing or releasing any catch to clamp it in place. Petrol station tyre inflators have pressure gauges, too, but these aren’t always accurate so it’s best to test using your own equipment. The instructions say to wait 15 minutes after 15 minutes of use; after this run the pump’s body felt only slightly warm to touch, but taking it apart I found the motor was extremely hot, so I really would give it a break between long runs; it’s not designed to compete with an industrial compressor so be sensible.It’s noisy, dishing out 77dB in operation. And the pressure gauge can be difficult to read since, because it goes up to 250psi, that crucial 0 to 60psi zone is crammed into the first quarter of the dial. However, it pumped up our test tyre from 20 to 30psi in just under two-and-a-half minutes, with no fuss or faff. It’s a shame that the supplied accessories are so basic – just a ball inflator and two adaptors for inflatable toys – still, if you’re looking to spend as little as possible, then the Storm Force Mini does the job.
Larger inflators include rechargeable batteries, which make them completely portable. These are a better option if you want to pump up, say, bicycle tyres, without having to wheel the bike next to your car. You may also need a larger inflator for tyres that need higher-than-average pressures, such as a larger van or campervan. What about extras? As an extra bonus, for me at least, the expansion tank on our central heating needs to be charged to 3 bar (43.5psi), which is really awkward to do with my stirrup pump as you have to press it against the wall, making it hard to get the necessary force; with the Ring I can just plug it in and off it goes. When our plumber saw it, he went out and bought one straight away. Comes with LED light to make night time inflation easier and safer. How to test your tyre pressure Despite its smaller size, the Ring performed well, inflating the tyre faster than some of the larger models in this test. The Ring also retains a leisure inflator/deflator and is fitted with a Deflate button. We were also a fan of the foolproof knob and display set-up, and the smart carrying bag. Despite some initial challenges in deciphering the pictograms on the device, the RTC4000 was found to be incredibly accurate and straightforward to operate once the function was figured out. Although clearer instructions could improve the initial experience, it doesn't detract from the inflator's overall performance. The RTC4000 in Action Users will also appreciate the thoughtful design elements, including a potent built-in LED light to illuminate the wheel valve in poorly lit conditions, which can also serve as an emergency light. Furthermore, the RTC4000 comes in a smart storage case, which cleverly allows the inflator to charge while safely nestled inside.
