About this deal

It worked quite well, although framing was imprecise at times, moving my eye slightly moved the reticule relative to the subject a little. It suffers from parallax (unsurprisingly), so the dot and the photo centre line up at one distance and move apart closer/further. My approach was to calibrate at the distance I expected stuff to happen at and aim a little high/low for stuff at different distances. This is mostly an issue with long lenses with small FoVs. I identified and positioned the subject under the reticule, then what, the camera/lens is 'wobbly' in my hands. Cameras – LCD screen is heavily worn either by de-lamination or has scratches to it. Rubber grips are starting to come away from the body. An alternative way of holding the camera is by keeping the camera strap above the left shoulder and under the right one, and push the camera away from the body until the strap tightens. In this way, the strap contributes to steadying the camera. This position increases the distance of the eye from the dot-sight, but may be vulnerable to arm fatigue.

The first interesting thing about this product is that it is compatible with any camera featuring a hot-shoe mount. Good for birds. Most other situations the camera AF is more than good enough. I have not used one but have bought cheap Chinese gunsight versions and made my own mounts. Note that cameras with a middle hump placement for their hot-shoe are not the best type for use with a sight that has parallax issues. Might be ok to fit a flashgun way up there. When fitted i aligned the dot by auto point-focusing the lens on a known subject and adjusting the red dot to suit via a small play in the hot shoe mount.

Condition guide

I'm looking for ways to improve my autofocus on my cameras including the E-M1 and I see a mention of the Olympus EE-1 Dot Sight. The EE-1 seems like a very simple object to use at first glance but it needs to be configured and that requires some trial and error. With BIF, I generally position myself based on the wind pattern. I use the light depending on what mood/effect I want. Depending on the location you may have limited options. Shooting against the sun can work fine, but your images will look similar if you do that all the time.

When hearing the name Olympus, you might think about micro-43. But this tool is just as good when used on a Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm or Sony camera as it is on a micro-43 camera from Olympus or Panasonic. The only thing you need is a hotshoe on top of the camera for attaching the Olympus EE-1 DOT SIGHT. HOW DOES AN OLYMPUS EE‑1 DOT SIGHT WORK?Forget the single AF point because it would require your composition to be more precise and for you to keep an eye on the LCD/EVF constantly to make sure the AF point was on the subject. On the E-M1 I used the 9-Target Group area and even the All-Target group area on some occasions. With the GX8 I set a Custom Area with 9 areas or more depending on the subject and the scene. I sometimes use an extender to get the EE-1 in front of the camera; because I wear hats and the EE-1 gets in the way when trying to use the EVF. I'm still looking for a good low-profile extender, however.
