About this deal

I read about them for a while before taking the plunge, and certainly some Chinese clones are reported as being not up to scratch, however mine (badged 'Jstvro' on the front) appears to have no problems at all. Important to make sure its firmware is legitimate (registered). Band values / frequency values. The DDC version is the undisputed leader here. In addition, these figures have actually already been confirmed. Main chip ARM STM32H743VIT6 MCU High-performance and DSP with DP-FPU, ARM Cortex-M7 MCU with 2MBytes Flash, 1MB RAM, 400 MHz CPU

You can see lots of videos on You Tube about these Receivers, so I will not go into many more details. At present, there’s a question that anyone considering purchasing a Malahit, or any of the Chinese clones, should ask: what is your objective? If the answer is to have a high performing portable, I have to offer some other observations. No obscenities, discriminatory, abusive, or other content not suitable in public or for younger readers. Weak points included the SMA antenna connector – specifically the short cable going from the antenna to the PCB board, and sharp noise spikes seen at numerous locations throughout the spectrum from mediumwave up to 30 MHz.

changed the behavior of the receiver with a short press on the power button. Now, with a short press in the receiver, the touchscreen is turned off, the spectrum and waterfall work similarly to the Pan & WTF Single option. One piece of advice I have passed to the Malahit team involves QC (quality control) issues with the screw holes on the cabinet. On both my initial DSP-2 and the replacement, one of the screws did not insert smoothly in the hole threads. This is something Georgiy is aware of and says will be dealt with in a re-design of the cabinet, though no timeline is provided. As to updating firmware – after navigating the YouTube videos and Russian language instructions provided by Malahiteam, using the STM32Cube software has, for me anyway, become fairly routine. The comparison took into account the results from the DDC versions with two ADC versions - AD9649 and MDRA1A16FI.

However, another requirement would be to redesign the antenna connector to make it more robust, preferably to BNC. Customers simply should not have to deal with some of the problems that have been seen with the current SMA structure. Yes, this is a bit of a rant, but it’s something I feel strongly about, not just on principle, but I have seen many producers of amazing projects just lose interest and stop producing because their (reasonable, IMO) terms are just ignored, At 3.6 volts current draw is 9 mA. The signal levels are very similar as with the original mini-whip at 12 V / 55 mA. I feel I have to jump in on this statement…“Judging by the fact that the schematic, software and BOM is all freely released, the project appears to be open source”I tapped on every menu option in every category. All work as advertised, even ones I did not fully understand. Noise reduction is extraordinary.

After installation of the August 16th 2.10TEST firmware, the really loud noise spike seen at 6 MHz seems to have disappeared as has the noise spike at 12 MHz. Yet, noise spikes are still seen at 6,155 kHz, 6330, 6510, 6690, 6870, etc. at 180 kHz to 200+ kHz intervals. The result: indeed the numerous noise spikes that are seen so prominently when using the receiver with a whip antenna, indoors or out, seem to disappear or become subsumed in the noise floor of the receiver. For HF listening I use my Malahit with a specially designed PA0RDT mini-whip which runs off the Malahit’s internal Bias-Tee. Add to this the various steps often needed with the Malahit, including fine adjustments of AGC, RF gain, PRE-AMP level and limits, etc to counteract internal noise issues and boost sensitivity where necessary. By the time all of this is completed, one could have been actually listening to stations on a 990x or SONY 2010. At every point when testing the Malahit, I have concluded my sessions by taking a Tecsun receiver – 990x, 501x, PL-330 and 368 – and comparing them in terms of basic listenability, to the Malahit. I have used some older classic portables – SONY SW-77, ICF-2010, SW-100, Panasonic RF-B65, even a SONY ICF-7700 (a mostly forgotten basic portable) and tuned in the same signals. Power consumption. The power consumption is not the strength of the DDC - the digital technology eats up a lot of energy. In comparison, there is one more characteristic - the prices. With the DDC, the price is significantly higher due to the more expensive components
