About this deal

Alt-Berg only recommends Leder-Gris® – we DO NOT recommend dubbins, saddle soap, or any kiwi type polishes Note: Use of Leder-Gris® Xtreme may darken the finish of the leather especially in the toe area or where the boot is scuffed or scratched. Should I also be looking at treating the inside leather parts as well? Would lanolin suffice for that? In the early nineties I started to become unhappy with the water absorbency of the leather we were using on our gamekeeper boots - we were using a WR100 leather (when WR100 leather is flexed in water for 100 minutes and it must not absorb more than 6% of its weight in moisture). We had noted that after 6 months the leather we were using in our gamekeeper boots was absorbing 14% - over twice as much. Leder Gris boot wax has been designed for use in average UK conditions. It is suitable for regular application as it won’t overly soften your boots or damage the leather even if used frequently.

Nowadays our standard Leder-Gris wax is made for us by Grangers of England. Some years ago I realised that in more extreme conditions a different type of bootcare was necessary to complement our existing Leder-Gris wax. Soldiers who get their boots wet every day during training exercises and gamekeepers required a treatment with a higher oil content, so I developed Leder-Gris Xtreme. Leder-Gris Xtreme is a restorative bootcare product - it is not intended for regular use, but if boots become extremely wet, and if the leather shows signs of hardening - Leder-Gris Xtreme will help replace some of the oils, to restore some suppleness to the leather. Both products are tried and tested in all conditions - traditional bootcare for modern leathers.

Deleying Hardening/Cracking Of Leather (Leder Gris)

The oil in the Leder Gris has been designed to replace the natural oils in the leather, which can be lost when boots dry out. Eventually we started to win other contracts and we increased sales of our outdoor boots to retailers - so I began to build up capacity at the Italy factory. This has enabled me to keep the Richmond factory as a specialist boot-making workshop. I still make most of our motorcycle boots in the Richmond factory, as well as making smaller quantities of our technical boots and being able to offer a specialist boot, making service to people who need it. Does an all in 1 product exist? Something to preserve and waterproof? Or a 2 or 3 stage process advised? eg preserve/soften then waterproof? (1 or more product). This waterproofing wax is easy to use - simply apply the wax oil to leather boots or shoes with a brush to ensure the oils penetrate deep into the leather. Having said all that when what is probably widely regarded as one of the best boot retailers and fitters in the country offers advice on the subject of boot care I would suggest that it's probably wise to listen and take note.

Since 2004 I have worked one week each month in the Italy Factory and the rest of the time I work in our factory in Richmond. In the early nineties I started to become unhappy with the water absorbency of the leather we were using on our gamekeeper boots - we were using a WR100 leather. We had noted that after 6 months the leather we were using in our gamekeeper boots was absorbing...over twice as much (as it ought to have). In most cases Leder-Gris® Original is all you will ever need assuming you clean and wax the boots regularly. Leder-Gris® Xtreme is for occasional use to soften leather if you have neglected to regularly clean and wax them and finally Leder-Glӧs™ is for girls or for blokes who have bigger blokes shouting and swearing at them because their boots aren't shiny enough. Stay away from the Leder-Glӧs™ you don't need it. At that time in Leicester there was a bootcare company - Allen & Caswell - and with them I worked on the problem of finding a wax oil that would be compatible with modern leather. The result was Leder-Gris. If after receipt of your claim form the product needs to be returned to us, we will provide a pre-paid return label or arrange collection for larger / heavier items, customer services will let you know how to proceed. Slightly higher synthetic and oils content which is absorbed into the leather without over softening it. The result extends the period of water repellency.

Leder-Gris Original is a mixture of 70% wax and 30% oil. It has been developed for everyday use in average UK conditions. In Italy and Germany, craft based manufacturing and remained strong, but by 2004, even they, were beginning to move production to lower cost countries in Eastern Europe. There was a factory I knew of in Italy, and in 2004, I began to make the ‘peacekeeper boot’ for the larger contracts there. Timescale to deal with your claim - for technical faults or repairs we use the services of the original manufacturer or nominated agent for inspection, testing and high quality guaranteed repairs. Please allow a reasonable timescale for completion of this process, customer services can advise further as this does vary between products. Not for regular everyday use: if used too often, Leder-Gris Xtreme will over-soften leather – so only use if leather is getting regularly soaked The original waterproofing wax, Altberg Leder Gris is ideal for treating your medium and heavy leather boots. The tannery had generations of experience and a really good leather testing Laboratory. It exported its WR100 leather all over the world. I think the recent financial crisis and recession has shown how short sighted we were in England when we closed down key exporting companies such as the Pittards tannery in Leeds. If leather shows signs of hardening, or after use in extreme wet conditions, use Leder-Gris® Xtreme as a ‘one-off’ treatment

Apply with a ‘putting on’ brush and buff vigorously into the surface of the leather, pay special attention to putting Leder-Gris into seams and areas where the boot flexes. • You can apply Leder-Gris while boot leather is slightly damp • Always treat boots with Leder-Gris before storage • Altberg recommend only Leder-Gris products for their boots Specifically formulated from waxes and synthetic oils developed specifically for use on all modern water repellent leather - used on most makes of leather hiking, military, police boots and shoes. Scarpa recommend the use of their own silicon based HS12 Cream or a water based wax treatment such as Aqueous Nikwax on the Montana calf leather leather used in the Terra GTX.

I've been attempting to do some reading up on boot care as I'd like to get a proper regime setup. Well more in the line of preserving and waterproofing the leather/boot. The wax element of the polish remains on the surface of your boot providing vital waterproofing to protect your boot and feet from wet conditions. is traditionally formulated from waxes and synthetic oils for use on all modern water repellent leathers - used on most makes of high quality military/hiking/police boots and shoes.
