The House of the Dragon is a HBO show on the HBO Max streaming service. It is based on some of the events from George RR Martin's Game of Thrones universe, specifically his companion novel Fire and Blood. It's separate from the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, which is the basis for the original series.If we look at Game of Thrones, we saw an almost seven-month wait for the DVD release of Season 8. It only took four months for Season 7 to arrive. The DVD release dates for both seasons were timed with Christmas releases. Shortly after the premiere, HBO announced its plans to renew the series for a second season, noting its almost instant popularity; the series brought in the largest new series audience in HBO’s history. (But can we really call it a new series?) With such deliberate pacing, House of the Dragon seems poised for at least one more season and possibly more. It’s worth remembering that the events of the series, even after the time jumps, still puts the date over one hundred years before Daenerys Targaryen is even born—allowing for decades more of Targaryen drama, inbreeding, and dramatic conversation-ending hmmms. Sapochnik, who has experience directing six Game of Thrones episodes, including Hardhome, The Long Night, and The Battle of the Bastards, directed the pilot as well as additional episodes. House of the Dragon is Sapochnik's first project as part of an overarching deal, where he is expected to develop and produce a range of content for both HBO and the HBO Max streaming service. He will, however, be stepping away from House of the Dragon from its second season onward.
