About this deal

Hoover has included onboard storage for all the accessories, so they’re easy to access mid-clean. They can also be used with the hose, but they don’t fit very well and can fall off. It’s generally a fiddly and time-consuming job to swap the attachments around, which we think is disappointing. Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach Suction Power and Cleaning Performance

Unfortunately, we think this vacuum cleaner has some major flaws that make it difficult to recommend. While it provides decent performance on carpets, it struggles on hard floors and is inconvenient to use. With that said, it’s available for a great price and could still be an option to consider if you have carpeted floors. Safety First! Please make sure your appliance is switched off before beginning any maintenance work. However, the battery performed well in its Turbo mode, delivering 13 mins 15 secs of cleaning before giving out. The other saving grace is that the battery takes only 2.5 hours to fully recharge, which is significantly faster than most rivals. If there’s one feature you can rely on Hoover to deliver, it’s neat onboard storage for all of its tools. The H-Upright 500 Plus doesn’t disappoint in this regard. Here, the motorised floor brush is attached to the base, while the other accessories clip around the body, including the 2-in-1 crevice tool and brush, the extra-long crevice tool and the attachable hose.

Of course, the proof of the pudding is in the cleaning, so to speak. We tested the HF500 with our usual suite of challenging tests, spilling both flour and Cheerios on both carpet and hard floor, then measuring how much the vacuum collects on a single pass. Unfortunately, we can’t say it does. The suction power isn’t great, and hard floors are a real struggle. You don’t get many attachments, and the ones you do get aren’t the best quality. For better all-round cleaning performance, the Shark IZ300UKT proved stronger in our tests. This has a soft roller for hard floors and can fold up for compact storage. It also comes with a greater number of tools and attachments, although it’s usually a bit more expensive, too. Note that this model can’t stand unsupported when extended, though, so you’ll always need to find somewhere to prop it up mid-clean. That said, you don’t get a pet attachment included, so it’s not as versatile for clearing up after your furry friends in other areas. There is a pet model available that includes the tool and is a better option if you have animals. Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach Price and Value for Money Starting with the Cheerios, the HF500 performed well. There are vents at the front of the floor head – gaps that can draw in and swallow larger items, such as chunky breakfast cereal.

As a plug-in model, cleaning reach is important, and the H-Upright 500 Plus provides up to 15 metres, thanks to the long power cable, hose and the extendable crevice tool (this is 36cm long and has a further extension tube to take it to 76cm). The net result is that whether you’re cleaning down low or up high, reach won’t be a problem with this cleaner; you’ll rarely need to lift its full 6.5kg bulk. On hard floor, the brush bar automatically dropped down in speed. However, I still found it to be a bit vigorous, with some of the scattering of rice grains being pushed around on the floor. Int his scenario I found that it was better to use the vacuum cleaner with the brush bar turned off. The Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach is one of the cheaper upright vacuum cleaners. But does it offer value for money? Next up is gaps in the air flow. This hose is in pretty good condition, but over time the plastic can degrade and rub against parts of the machine and you can end up with something looking like this. Now this is a pretty extreme example, but even the smallest of holes can cause a loss of suction. I found this cleaner easy to push around and it’s pretty flexible, too. However, the H-Upright 500 Plus’ large body means that it may be difficult to get it under all furniture. Shark solves this problem with its Lift-Away range of cleaners, which let you remove the cylinder to push the floor head around on the wand alone.

Opt for ease of use with a classic stand up vacuum

The Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach is a bagless upright vacuum cleaner that’s at the lower end of the price spectrum. As the “Reach” name suggests, it has a wide cleaning radius compared to many uprights. Other features include a swivel nozzle floorhead and HEPA filter for enhanced filtration.
