About this deal

This is a good whiskey. It’s not crazy unique or anything. There’s nothing that stands out as unusual or totally unexpecting. It’s about what you expect when you think of a good, cask strength bourbon. A man’s man type of bourbon with strong oak, leather, and tobacco. Very traditional whiskey at first, but there is some character and complexity when you dig deeper. At the moment, the whiskeys are made elsewhere in the US, but are all tied to Tennessee in various stages of production either via distillation, ageing, barrel finishing or bottling.

We also see significant potential in Mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea and Canada (where we plan to double our business). Export is undoubtedly a substantial opportunity for us, and travel retail is a key focus. Through Ronan and another colleague Andy McNamara who manages our APAC business, we’re intensifying our efforts in travel retail. Now that we’ve covered the basics of Heaven’s Door, we can get into the important aspect of this whiskey – taste. Again, this is their single barrel cask strength expression of their bourbon. It will have a unique profile to this barrel, but we should still be able to get a good idea of the quality of whiskey Heaven’s Door is putting out.It is said the project will help drive economic growth and opportunities in the county by creating more than 50 jobs and bringing tourism to the area. Additionally, with the work at the Heaven’s Door Distillery at Six Mile Creek, where we will lay down more barrels and boost our capacity, we have the ability to produce over 50,000 barrels annually. Nearly half a century on, some 50 more albums in my possession, barely a day passes by that I don’t listen to Dylan . At university I even wrote a dissertation on Mr Tambourine Man.

True, the differences could be due to barrel selection, but when you take into consideration the 70% corn mash bill (GD’s is 84%) it’s likely it’s not them. Either way, it’s a fun tasty whiskey and I’m going to enjoy sharing and sipping through this bottle. The mouthfeel can be a bit thin, but a second of chewing will fully change that. Chewing, or swirling (gently) the whiskey around, or even letting it rest in your mouth for a second or two will bring about a very buttery mouthfeel with a lot of vanilla. Value At the moment, about 85% of our business is in the US, and 15% from exports. Our goal for next year is to reconfigure our model, aiming for 75% of our business in the US and 25% from export. With Ronan we’re exploring growth opportunities in the UK, Spain, Germany, and other markets [main story continues under panel below]. Ah, but I was so much older then, I’m younger than that nowFinal Thoughts: It has a nutty taste which I associate with some Jim Beam and Tennessee whiskeys. The nutty flavor is not my preference, but I give it a 3.5 because it does morph a bit sip by sip, changing slightly making it more fun. KP:The current distillery has a capacity of about 8,000 barrels and the new one will have the potential to produce around 40,000.

Martin Moodie: You’re a young brand albeit with an incredible connection to one of the world’s most famous men. Behind it, there’s both a commercial story and a creative story. If I were a travel retailer reading this for the first time, what can you tell me about the journey so far? In essence, it is highly drinkable with a lot of delicious flavors. Those flavors have come, in part, from the charred American new oak barrel it’s been aged in for nearly seven years. How to drink Heaven’s Door whiskey? Consider some of the world’s great airports, such as Dubai, the busiest global gateway by international passenger numbers. Think about the diverse traveller base passing through, representing every nationality and region. Given that your product category is universal and the fact you have the involvement of one of the greatest musicians and poets of the past century, I believe people at airports around the world will take notice. It’s true that it might be slightly overpriced and that there are better whiskeys you can buy in the same price range, but think about this -- not all whiskeys have an input from Bob Dylan. In that respect, you’re not just buying a drink. You’re buying a slice of American history. The Tennessee straight bourbon is considered the signature Heaven’s Door whiskey since it’s the one that has won the most praise. It even came second at the 2018 Ultimate Spirits Challenge. There’s much to be said about Bob Dylan. One of the standout traits that’s set him apart from his peers is that he’s relentless in his search for trying new things. The producer is Heaven’s Door Spirits, a venture between Dylan and drinks entrepreneur Marc Bushala. Heaven’s Door Whiskey variations The Heaven’s Door brand center includes plans to construct a new 15,000 square foot immersive art experience adjacent to the church which will feature a collection of Bob Dylan’s critically acclaimed paintings and metalworks, as well as curated exhibitions of other artists.
