About this deal

Limbajul este marinaresc, tehnic, masculin, putand afla lucruri interesante despre navigare, vase, uzante ale porturilor, jurnalul de bord si altele. Many chronicles have been written about life at sea, but few, if any, can compare with Joseph Conrad's masterpiece. Jukes, the first mate. Typhoon alternates between his third-person limited point of view, the third-person limited point of view of MacWhirr, and the third-person omniscient point of view of the narrator. I listened to the audiobook version of this novella, in which a ship is caught in a typhoon in the South China Sea. The audio was just over 3 hours long and was offered as “included” in my Audible membership (i.e., it didn’t require me to use credits).

Mike Sutton led the RAF's premier Typhoon squadron into battle against a brutal enemy. Flying the world's most advanced multi-role combat jet, every mission across the treacherous skies above Syria and Iraq saw him and his team tested to the limit. The threat of being shot down was a fact of life. Every split-second decision meant the difference between life and death. Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park: Discover rare animals, authentic adventures and world-class entertainment transporting you to the heart of nature For whatever reason I seem to read quite a few ship/boat books. Normally non-fiction, but nevertheless, it is a bit strange, as I am not in the slightest interested in going sailing/boating. I don't mind a bit of fishing, but on a boat it is normally balanced with an hour of looking a bit green, and staring at the horizon, regretting eating breakfast prior to fishing. My worst nightmare would be one of those Southern Ocean Antarctic stormy sea in a small boat 'adventures', few people, freezing cold, soaking wet, god I feel like I have pneumonia already, etc...All of the violence takes place off screen, with people finding out about others being killed, beaten or brutalized after the fact. I think this is part of the narration because its supposed to be from the reporter. Further we never feel that Lennox is in danger. Maybe that is because of the plot devise of starting the novel, with Lennox having escaped some kind of explosion. Sure, there’s drug-running, people smuggling, violence. But Triad societies also pay for schooling in their local communities, find jobs for the unemployed, help out families who might have fallen on hard times. It’s not all protection money. It’s not all turf wars and assassinations. They run the construction industry here.’

First of all, the writing, the prose, is exceptionally good. It is pretty darn amazing, since English was not Joseph Conrad’s mother tongue! He was born in Poland in 1857. On the other hand, he worked for the British mercantile marine for sixteen years and thereafter became a British citizen*. Simply by becoming a British citizen though, does not mean one by osmosis becomes so fluent, so adept in the new language! The writing is vivid. The description of the storm will have you on the edge of your seat. Before the storm has even arrived, tension mounts. One palpably perceives the stillness, the menacing calm that precedes the storm. It is spooky; it is eerie. The storm erupts, all hell breaks loose, then the lull at the eye of the storm descends. The reader is completely caught up in the weather! Quite simply, the writing is extremely good. The novella classically evokes the seafaring life at the turn of the century. While Macwhirr, who, according to Conrad, "never walked on this Earth" - is emotionally estranged from his family and crew, and though he refuses to consider an alternative course to skirt the typhoon, his indomitable will in the face of a superior natural force elicits grudging admiration. Anyone expecting a book about a severe weather event will be disappointed; but readers familiar with the author’s style of British "spook" thrillers will enjoy this one, timely given the current unrest in Hong Kong. It opens in June 2005 with SIS (MI6) operative Joe Lennox waking from a coma in a Shanghai hospital, to be greeted by his friend, William Lasker, a Beijing-based journalist and support agent for SIS, at his bedside.

The plot is to discover and then thwart an extreme project to de-stabilise parts of China and undermine Beijing's triumphant emergence onto the world stage at the Beijing Olympics. The plot is driven by a personal triangle between the British SIS agent, Joe Lennox, the CIA agent, Miles Coolidge, and an expatriate woman, Isabella, initially Joe's girlfriend, and then Miles' wife. The motivations of these three characters are not the strongest part of the novel and the scenes between them seem clichéd, though it is always possible that Cumming is simply describing the superficial life of a cast transplanted from Spooks.
