Murrells, Joseph (1978). The Book of Golden Discs (2nded.). London: Barrie and Jenkins Ltd. pp. 247–248. ISBN 0-214-20512-6. Shankly hovers over Alun while Liverpool chairman Sidney Reakes looks dapper. Eggs seem also to be on the menu. Scaffold release reworked version of Thank U Very Much in aid of NHS". Expressandstar.com. 9 April 2020 . Retrieved 18 April 2020. Reviewing for Disc and Music Echo, Penny Valentine descried "Thank U Very Much" as "a very well-recorded little send-up record about life today. It has a jolly metronome beat and, if anything they do is aimed at a commercial market, this is the nearest they've got yet". [10] Peter Jones for Record Mirror described it as "a great old send-up of those ever-so-grateful-for-things songs – and it's pushed along at such a rare old pace that it's very catchy indeed. Maybe it's too much of a novelty but given the dee-jay support it must do well". [11]

Released at the beginning of November 1967, "Thank U Very Much" didn't reach its peak on the UK charts until two months later at the beginning of January 1968. It performed best on the Record Retailer, peaking at number 4. [1] Released in the US in January 1968, the song peaked at number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100, though performed better on the Record World chart, achieving a peak at number 43. [7] Elsewhere, "Thank U Very Much" performed best in New Zealand where it was top the Listener chart. [8] The song was notably a favourite of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and of the then- Prime Minister Harold Wilson. [9] Evans’ hopes of a bright future on Merseyside were thrown into turmoil however when he was subjected to a vicious, unprovoked assault which his career never truly recovered from. During a night out in a Wolverhampton nightclub owned by his fiancée’s father, the Liverpool forward had a pint glass thrust into his face which required dozens of stitches and ruled him out of action for over two months. By early 1973 The Scaffold had transferred to Island Records and released Fresh Liver, their first full album of new material since 1969, and from which no singles were released (aside from "W.P.C Hodges" which was credited to Gorman as a solo artist). The new album again featured most of the musical performers from Grimms and as such, like the earlier McGough And McGear album, it relied less heavily than usual on purely spoken-word material. The trio then concentrated on their work as part of Grimms, until the end of the year when McGear left that group after frayed tempers on another demanding UK tour led to an altercation with Brian Patten. a b c "SCAFFOLD | full Official Chart History | Official Charts Company". www.officialcharts.com . Evans would start the final against an Arsenal side who had clinched the league title days earlier and were aiming to become only the second club that century after north London rivals Tottenham a decade earlier to win the league and FA Cup double but failed to make much of an impact, being substituted by Peter Thompson midway through the second half as the Gunners eventually prevailed after extra time. There was also disappointment in Europe as Billy Bremner’s first leg goal in front of the Kop was enough to take Leeds to the UEFA Fairs Cup final and an unheralded Shankly signing just before the FA Cup final ultimately meant the writing was on the wall for Evans’s Anfield future although the remarkable reception Liverpool received on their homecoming parade despite the pain of defeat underlined what a special club he knew he was part of. Lily the Pink" (No. 1), based on a traditional song about Lydia Pinkham. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. [4]

Evans featured for 68 minutes in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the final after being chosen ahead of Peter Thompson. Charlie George scored the winner in extra-time. When asked what he remembers especially from that big day at Wembley... Evans doesn't really watch football as he thinks it's too much of chess-game at times and prefers the end-to-end action of Aussie Rules. There has been considerable debate as to the meaning of the place, item, person or event described in the lyric of the song "Thank U Very Much" as the Aintree Iron. The songwriter himself, Mike McGear, has apparently refused to divulge its identity. [3] Crowley, Tony (30 September 2017). After releasing a few more singles, McGear retired from the music business in the 1980s. Having proven himself artistically, he reverted to using his family name and has since carved out a career as a professional photographer and author. Gorman remained in the public eye through his regular appearances on such children's television programmes as Tiswas throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. He continued to perform and record, and later moved into theatrical direction and production. Meanwhile, in 1978, McGough released his spoken-word solo album Summer With Monika (based upon his celebrated poetry collection of the same name). Since then he has arguably maintained the highest-profile and most sustained post-Scaffold career, still appearing regularly as a vocal performer on British radio and television, and continuing to be a highly regarded poet and author. However, he simply couldn’t live with the brilliant El Fabiolo in the Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival. They were spotted at the Edinburgh Fringe and eventually signed for The Beatles‘ label Parlaphone Records and were even managed by Brian Epstein for a while. But it’s when they became famous that their story really begins…….

We had a great reception in Liverpool when we returned from the cup final even though we had lost. You're disappointed losing, but even more so when you see a reception like that. We didn't produce the result for them, but they still turned out. The streets were lined for miles and miles when we were coming into the city on the bus. That's Liverpool supporters for you."That was nice of him to say," Evans says. "The fee really didn’t bother me as I have always been such a down-to-earth guy. Tony Hateley moved to Coventry in the same week which made space for me in the side. I said to Shankly when I signed that I would progress in the reserves but he bawled at me that he'd bought me for the first team."
