Out of time" He begins to investigate the possible meaning in that message and in the process uncovers other deaths and other quotes, left by a suicidal hand. I had spent a dozen years as a police beat reporter and I knew that reality was quite the opposite of that.

For much of the book the guy was shoved around and bland, a dud with little to say -- to the point where I felt ticked off, and never "got" Rachel's interest in him, not remotely. This one is really different because Jack's a reporter, not a detective or private investigator so he doesn't have cop instincts. In truth, though, the author doesn't begin to inhabit the character of Jack McEvoy in the same way and to the same depth as he does the character of his more noted series protagonist, homicide detective Harry Bosch. He even, against all odds, manages an inside role in the investigations, only to find himself shut out of both the cases and his own story.

He is the executive producer of The Lincoln Lawyer, streaming on Netflix, starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo.

Sean's twin brother, Jack, a reporter with the Rocky Mountain News, sees little things that make him think that Sean's death is murder. Jack is soon off on the crime beat and running on the biggest story he’s had since The Poet crossed his path twelve years before – but The Scarecrow knows he’s coming . En ocasiones me quede diciéndome, qué haces, cuando Jack no reaccionaba de la manera que debería haberlo hecho. As I watched my daughter grow it began to bother me that I had created a fictional world where a killer like Robert Backus could walk free. This is less of a review than it is a sort of caveat to my rating—the caveat being that I listened to this book.A couple years after writing The Poet I became a father and my life became wonderful and vulnerable in the same moment. Take the protagonist, Jack McEvoy, for example: He is a Denver journalist who, after the very controversial and publicized suicide of his older brother (the lead homicide detective of an investigation into the brutal murder of a young schoolteacher), stumbles upon evidence that the police originally missed that confirms that his brother’s suicide was actually a murder.

This book ended up as a real page turner, as although a bit graphic at the start, when I nearly gave it up. Oh, mid-‘90s, how quaint you seem in this book published in ‘96 with your dial-up internet connections, faxes, pagers, landline phones, and new-fangled digital cameras. Sean McEvoy was under extreme stress investigating a University of Denver student, Theresa Lofton, found in 2 pieces by gunshot wounds in the Rocky Mountain National Park. From an objective standpoint, the killer’s life is a sad one, and he appears (like almost all pedophiles) to have been a victim of gross sexual abuse as a child himself. Also: I was nodding off over the trifling details in the conversations among the various characters; the book easily could have been pared back by a third, or so.

Backus admits that he himself is both Eidolon and The Poet, admitting to all of the killings and to his setup of Gladden as the "fall guy" for the murders. When the FBI attempts to block the investigation, Jack is able to trade his knowledge of the other deaths for a role with their team, which includes Robert Backus, the agent-in-charge, and Rachel Walling, who is assigned to handle Jack and becomes personally involved with him. Jack now begins to have second thoughts and ultimately concludes that Sean did not kill himself but was, in fact, the victim of a serial killer who has been targeting homicide detectives. It’s not his most impressive work but for a quick read and a look into the world of media in the 90’s/early 00’s then it’s pretty interesting and enjoyable. Now Harry Bosch is heading straight into the path of the most ruthless and inventive murderer he has ever encountered.

and on, there was information that I found myself bogged down with and I began to "count pages" wanting something to happened besides endless meetings. While it was a thoroughly enjoyable read, it simply didn't drag me kicking and screaming into the wee hours reading with bleary eyes the way that his previous Harry Bosch novels did. My review has concentrated on style, which may be important to some readers, rather than content as other reviews of The Poet and The Narrows deal very well with the content. The story begins in Denver with Jack McEvoy, a reporter, whose brother, a pice officer, placed a gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. While some things may very well be better left unsaid, continued physical and sexual abuse of children should never be one of those things that are swept under the rug or dismissed or simply ignored because it’s “too uncomfortable” a subject matter.
