Even though Laphroaig is not the most peated whisky around (that honour goes to Ardbeg), I do think the peated flavours are at the forefront of the palate and are highly prominent, which can make it seem more peaty than the likes of Ardbeg. Most negative reviews are based on the fact that it tastes peaty or smoky and nothing like whisky from other regions. It's like being dragged down to the sea shore in a storm and having your face pushed under the water before being pulled out and left to recover by a fire whilst having your cuts dressed with TCP and sticking plaster.
