The film has a few drawbacks but, in my opinion, they are only minor when compared to the beauty and ferocity that Peter Jackson has fashioned.

Watts, whose accessibility balances out her almost otherworldly loveliness, works wonders with mere glances, and Andy Serkis, who digitally embodies Kong here much as he did Gollum in the LOTR films, breathes vibrant life into the giant star of the film without ever overplaying any emotions. I like the feature but somehow I feel a historical look at the Ape and his influence would have been a better option. The image is glorious, and even if the eventual inclusion of a full-on DTS-ES mix eclipses the DD 5.

Prepare to marvel at the full magnitude of this incredible force of nature with our King Kong merchandise – the perfect addition to your Monsterverse memorabilia. As far as Weta Digital go, I don't think we really see enough of what it took to produce Kong and his battles and presumably this, along with the recollections of the cast which is also curious by its absence on the DVD, will be catered for when we get the next edition of King Kong. Nonetheless, Warner has bestowed just as much attention on Son of Kong as on its parent, and the black-and-white image is as fine as one could hope for. Jackson's real success with Lord of the Rings, aside from that project's sheer scale, was in presenting the fantastical without irony or feyness.For many of us—particularly in the New York area—our first memory of seeing the father of all monster movies is tied to Thanksgiving marathons (on Channel 9, the old WOR in New York) of Kong, The Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young, the latter two of which are also debuting on disc separately and as part of a four-DVD collection. The V-Rexes and the Brontosaur herd are obviously CG - your brain is telling you that constantly - but the detail afforded their appearances is breathtaking.

One caveat, though, is that the score seems slightly subdued compared to the many times that I saw the film at the cinema - in particular the V-Rex smackdown in which several elements of the cue seem overwhelmed by the fx. And I, for one, will remember the glint in Kong's eyes long after I've forgotten that giant piranha. Someone even asks Peter Jackson just why he is so open about the making of his films, and why he chose to allow these Diaries to be produced in the first place.

There's going to be an ear-blisteringly cool DTS track at some point but, for now, just relax, turn up the volume and let yourself be transported to the insect-infested Skull Island and the bustling urban jungle of 1930's New York with a DD5.
