About this deal

The Rangers mostly drove American Sherman tanks, denigrated from the beginning for having smaller guns and less armor than German tanks, but Holland records few complaints. The taverna is the only place that Kostas and Defne can meet in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic and chilli peppers, creeping honeysuckle, and in the centre, growing through a cavity in the roof, a fig tree. The winter of '44-'45 saw the NW European theater experience some of the worst, wettest and coldest weather in years.

The SRY story from D-day to the end of the war is told here in a very detailed account that is a fitting tribute to all that served with the SRY.This is probably as good a book as you will ever read on armoured warfare in North West Europe, 1944-45. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. In addition the unit had an inspiring Chaplain, Major Chaplain Leslie Skinner and a marvelous, dedicated family support structure led by Myrtle Kellett whose husband, previous commander of the Sherwood's, Edward "Flash" Kellett, was killed in Tunisia 1943. Informed by never-before-seen documents, letters, photographs, and other artifacts from Rangers’ families—an ongoing fraternity—and by his own deep knowledge of the war and personal experience driving a Sherman tank, Holland offers a uniquely intimate portrait of the war at ground level, introducing heretofore unknowns such as Commander Stanley Christopherson, squadron leader John Semken, and Sergeant George Dring. So often in the war, technological advances in weaponry developed faster than man’s effective means of operating it.

I hope to be laughing at life with you again before so many months,” English lieutenant Bill Wharton wrote to his pregnant wife Marion, “[and I’m] looking forward with so much anticipation to seeing that smile of yours when we next meet. Among many such stories, I found Stuart Hill's reaction to the death of his friend Denis Elmore to be particularly moving. He’s an enormously prolific historian of the war, but each book he produces is constructed with great care and emotional commitment . One of WWII’s finest historians, James Holland is the author of The Savage Storm, Brothers in Arms, Sicily ’43, Normandy ’44, Big Week, The Rise of Germany and The Allies Strike Back in the War in the West trilogy, and Dam Busters.after the allied victory their next major operation was the landings and subsequent campaign in Normandy which takes up at least a third of the book. New and familiar characters abound, voiced by a bright mix of performers, including Kat Dennings, Regé-Jean Page, Emma Corrin, Michael Sheen, Kristen Schaal, Brian Cox, John Lithgow, Jeffrey Wright, and so many more, including fan-favorite narrators Simon Vance and Ray Porter. A direct hit on a tank with a panzerfaust warhead could ignite the ammunition in a tank turning it into a blazing inferno in seconds, like in the movie "Fury," yet one blasted through the armor of another and passed harmlessly between a man's legs merely scorching his pant legs. The book does not require any specialist knowledge of armoured warfare or the Second World War as James does a great job of explaining obscure terms and putting the Regiment's activities into context. while in Normandy the Sherwood Rangers came up against a considerable amount of defence as they advanced south with many of the Germans best tanks being brought into the region.

This book is a testimony to Hollands handwork over the years of speaking to the veterans, their families and doing what he does best walking the ground. You are also brought along with the officers and the enlisted men who make up the unit and who suffer like all of the rest giving their life for peace hopefully. The immersive story Holland tells is unrivalled and the gripping narrative is as intense as it is heartbreaking. The friendships and comraderie developed under dangerous and trying circumstances lasted a lifetime, at least for those who survived. From D-Day to VE-Day, the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry, a British armored regiment, fought their way across western Europe. Please don't worry about about the condition of any 2nd Hand Books or other items you purchase, they'll be exactly as described in the details section.
