About this deal

Mary’s Church in Maidenhead, UK, is a believer who has battled same sex attraction from his teens years until now.

Ever since I have been open about my own experiences with homosexuality, a number of Christians have said something like this: 'the gospel must be harder for you than it is for me', as though I have more to give up than they do. It’s not that the Bible opposes all homosexual activity but approves of any and every sexual act between heterosexual people. But in this cultural moment, which urges people to boldly take up their LGBT+ identity, those who choose God over sex and romance echo that cry of Peter to Jesus: Where else would we go?

This book can encourage them to hold their ground and live out their beliefs despite cultural pressure, and provides wise encouragement from a seasoned believer who has dealt with similar struggles. Allberry, a single pastor in England who has struggled with same-sex attraction for years, is firm on truth and orthodoxy while still being compassionate to those who deal with this particular temptation. The parts about how Christians can react when people (both Christian and non-Christian) come out to them were really good - spoiler, it's be nice to them and keep being their friend.Gays are more likely to be confronted about their sexual sin in the public square than are straight fornicators. While Allberry argues the individual may not be irredeemable after complete sexual rejection, he also states that the “same-sex attracted” individual’s sexual, relational, and connectional orientations are fundamentally irredeemable.

I’m encouraged by this book and have to trust that the power of God’s truth, love, and grace will be revealed to those who hear it. Most of all though I am encouraged by Sam's insistence on keeping the main thing the main thing, and reassured that by being a church that preaches the gospel first and foremost, and represents a true biblical model of the church in the way we relate to one another, we will see the lives of same sex attracted individuals changed in our church! Yet Allberry rightfully insists we stick to the truths of the gospel when attempting to navigate the murky waters of gender identity. He'd like to lodge a complaint with God about the inconvenience of facial hair, but thanks him for tennis, gin, and books. It’s a useful one to hang on to and refer back to, either to answer your own questions or those of friends. Sam Allberry seeks to re-centre the conversation to what the Bible actually says rather than on what we want it to say. This requires tough decisions from all of us, but we’re also reminded that wonderfully ‘the same offer of forgiveness and deep, wonderful, life-changing love’ (p.

Because the Gospel should never be separated from what God does, and talk of sin should never be separated from talk of sin. And Other Questions about Homosexuality, the Bible, and Same-Sex Attraction, Sam Allberry combines pastoral wisdom, authentic autobiography, and sound exegesis to provide Christians with a helpful introduction to the topic of homosexuality. Sam Allberry discusses the issues he himself encountered, and offers a way to stay faithful to the Bible while not denying his essential identity. However, I would recommend that you don’t do that, but that instead you take the time to go through it. The work’s publication in 2013 is not surprising, as discussion surrounding same-sex marriage, ordination of queer clergy, and LGBTQ+ rights intensified in both broader Christianity and in western societies.
