Alba and Pedro are fond of each other, but do not know they are father and daughter, although Pedro suspects this. In The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende, we are introduced to the Trueba family, whose lives are deeply intertwined with the political and social upheavals of their country.

Spanning four generations, Isabel Allende's magnificent family saga is populated by a memorable, often eccentric cast of characters. Enraged by Pedro Segundo's departure, Trueba begins hunting for Pedro Tercero himself, eventually tracking him down to a small shack near his hacienda.Handed down this gift, Allende admits that she has had a number of meaningful dreams over the years that have influenced both her writing and family life. The novel was named Best Novel of the Year in Chile in 1982, and Allende received the country's Panorama Literario award.

Meanwhile, Blanca befriends one of the peasant children, Pedro Tercero, the young son of Esteban's foreman Segundo. Against a backdrop of revolution and counterrevolution, Allende brings to life a family whose private bonds of love and hatred are more complex and enduring than the political allegiances that set them at odds. Rosa waits patiently while Esteban slowly accumulates wealth by working in the mines so that he will feel worthy of Rosa. This work has been reissued many times in many formats, but nothing compares with owning a copy in its original first edition state. This tight relationship between past and future, linked by storytelling, is evident in the book's recursive ending.
