About this deal

However, I felt that although there were a female and a male protagonist, the other characters were also equally strong and because of that the strength attached to the main characters were quite diminished. The team sent to the Arctic Circle comprises Rachel and four other civilian scientists: Michael Tolland, an oceanographer who is a household name because of his frequent television appearances; Norah Mangor, a glaciologist with a cold and prickly personality; Wailee Ming, a brilliant paleontologist; and, finally, Corky Marlinson, a highly strange individual who is also one of the leading astrophysicists in his field. The book is woven around NASA’s discovery of a meteorite containing fossils claiming evidence of extraterrestrial life, the effect of this finding on U. The three are brought to a ship owned by Tolland in the Atlantic Ocean near the New Jersey coastline where they will hide out for the time being.

Zachary Herney: The President of the United States, criticized for his extravagant expenditure of U. She is a realist about her father's politics and has little respect for his stand on NASA, but Senator Sexton cannot help but have a problem with her involvement. Occasionally the remarkable scientific knowledge of Dan Brown gets in the way with ultra technical expositions which interrupt the proceedings. Her father, Senator Sedgewick Sexton, is a presidential candidate who is more popular than incumbent President of the United States Zachary Herney.Dan Brown is a graduate of Amherst College and Phillips Exeter Academy, where he has taught English and Creative Writing.

Multiply that by 5 (some instance of someone using, gasp, cream, or sugar) and 2 minutes have been sucked from your life. Pickering's intention is to help president Herney maintain the office for ulterior motivations of his own: his ultimate goal is to make NASA a division of NRO, thus rendering its operations clandestine.

Rachel attempts to reason with Pickering, saying that murder is not a justifiable way of solving the problem. Big Mystery + Male Protagonist + Female Protagonist + Code to Solve + OMG TRAITOR WITH TWISTED MOTIVES = Best Selling Novel. It is the politics and the problems that are caused by it, the disintegration within the society and the conflicts, of course, to reach the summit, whether in a good or bad way. When the President sent the civilian team to verify the authenticity of the meteorite, Pickering realized that they would discover his plot and that they needed to be eliminated at all costs.

The Polar episode climaxes with a murderous attack on the scientists and the daughter of the opposition candidate. The ship and Pickering are sucked in by a vortex, while a Coast Guard Osprey picks up Rachel, Tolland and Marlinson. Fleeing for their lives in an environment as desolate as it is lethal, they possess only one hope for survival: to find out who is behind this masterful ploy. This author has a history and a deserved reputation for writing huge complex novels which draw the reader in right to the end. The discovery of the meteorite therefore becomes part of political powerplay in Washington and Sexton's daughter who's working for the NRO gets caught up in it. Delta Force members are handpicked from CAG (Combat Applications Group) – a classified organization within Special Operations Command in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

When a new NASA satellite detects evidence of an astonishingly rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice, the floundering space agency proclaims a much needed victory. According to NASA, insect-like fossil material has been found around the meteorite; it resembles insect life found on Earth but is not exactly like anything ever identified by entomologists on this planet. He tells Rachel about her father's true motivations for becoming President, and that he (Pickering) masterminded the fake meteorite to hurt Senator Sexton's campaign, protecting the American people in his eyes.

The title Deception Point refers to the conspiracy regarding the meteorite and its implications for the government. Definitely worth a read, and I intend to grab Digital Fortress next so I can say I've read them all so far. Just like his Robert Langdon series this is sometimes a little silly but, like the better Langdon novels, it's also a lot of page-turning fun.
