About this deal

As these five women discover there is more to each other than meets the eye, they form a unique bond that will change their lives forever. It deas with some pretty gritty topics as well, which adds something to the book and moves it away from the chick-lit genre it would otherwise be placed in.

The sights, sounds, smells, and tensions of Kabul make the city become another character In A Cup of Friendship by Deborah Rodriguez. It is funny yet also a serious and thought provoking depiction of how life is in Kabul, and how Afghans view western “help”.

The goods do not need to be in their original packaging however in a sellable condition, and at your own cost and risk. Having read a number of fiction books about Afghanistan (A Thousand Splendid Suns being my favourite) I was keen to read this book following five women in Kabul.I wasn’t sure about some of the words at first, the cultural difference and I was unsure if I could connect with it, but I enjoyed it as I read more, and it held my interest. And finally there's elderly den mother Halajan, whose secret new hobby is itself an act of rebellion. It's evident the author has first hand knowledge of what it was like, particularly for women, to live in Kabul at the beginning of the Taliban resurgence. It's worth checking out the authors Wikipedia page to understand how she came to be in Afghanistan and the controversy her books caused, she does however acknowledge this in the authors note in this book.

Like the author wanted a way of spouting and did it through characters but just in an unfinished way. If this doesn’t open your eyes and make you more conscious of what these people have gone through, then I don’t know what else will. This is a truly wonderful story, with characters you fall in love with and watch grow as the tale unfolds.I wasn’t surprised when I learned that the author has lived in Kabul for several years herself, because the book shows a good understanding of the history of Afghanistan, the politics, corruption, and the opium trade. Rodriguez captures place and people wholeheartedly, unveiling the faces of Afghanistan's women through a wealth of memorable characters who light up the page.

Interwoven into their stories are a multitude of other, mostly male characters, who impact the women in a variety of different ways. Deborah] Rodriguez captures place and people wholeheartedly, unveiling the faces of Afghanistan's women through a wealth of memorable characters who light up the page. It was refreshing to read a book about Afghanistan that doesn’t paint its Afghan characters as people in need of ‘enlightenment’. In addition, as Sunny and her friends persevere in protecting the lives of those in danger, the mystery and suspense centered on the lives of the characters sustain the readers' interest to the end. The characters are lovable and their good qualities seep through in the story and you’ll want to help them overcome their faults yourself.

Readers will appreciate in-depth, sensory descriptions of this oft-mentioned and faraway place that most have never seen.
