About this deal

Whether writing about Waterloo, Assaye or any of the less celebrated battles that form the backbone of Sharpe’s adventures, Cornwell is rightly celebrated for his historical accuracy and his ability to capture the frenetic chaos of war and bloodshed. In Sharpe’s Command, Sharpe kills Frenchies again, but it is offhandly (and in somewhat unworldly numbers – he’d hardly have achieved a better kill rate if his detachment had been armed with an Bren Gun). A bridge at Almaraz is a key link between two French armies and destroying it will be a key factor to enable British success. Wading waist-deep in shit to scrape mineral deposits off the walls, Still, they are French, so they possibly don't notice.

These were A Crowning Mercy, published in 1983, Fallen Angels in 1984, and Coat of Arms (aka The Aristocrats) in 1986.

I love it hen history is brought to life through fiction and Bernard Cornwall has done a superb job of this in Sharpes Command. Richard Sharpe and his gang are back in Spain during the Penninsular War, killing Frenchmen and their allies. His father was a Canadian airman, and his mother, who was English, a member of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. They also requested that the story feature a large role for Spanish characters to secure co-funding from Spain.

Charmed Life arrives in an explosion of magic in this edition illustrated by Alison Bryant and introduced by Katherine Rundell. I was given a pretty good sense of the geography and where things are in relation to each other which isn’t always the case. This first ever illustrated edition of Sharpe’s Triumph, produced in series with Sharpe’s Tiger, features a map of India at the time and a battle plan of the fateful conflict, as well as action-packed illustrations by series artist Douglas Smith.Cornwell seems to be having a fun time writing these days, as this was just full of clever wit from the always lovable duo of Sharpe and Harper along with an earnest but bumbling young artillery lieutenant who provided plenty of comic relief. Okay this has full on ignited my Napoleonic interest again - a by-product of my roman empire being the French Revolution. It's one of the breezier Sharpe books at 300 pages, and I enjoyed the laser focus on a single clear mission with a fun fictional French-sympathizing Spanish villain getting in Sharpe's way as he's trying to fulfill his reconnoissance task ahead of the attack. I remember a time when to pick up a Cornwall book was good but the reputation is being damaged by seriously bad fodder. Cornwell wanted to start the series with the Siege of Badajoz but decided instead to start with a couple of "warm-up" novels.
