The city’s crowded streets, thriving arts scene, passionate politics and seedy cabarets provide the backdrop for a chance meeting with a woman, which will haunt him for the rest of his life, in this emotionally powerful, intensely atmospheric and touchingly profound novel about new beginnings and the unfathomable nature of the human soul. Having served his sentence for several months in Konya and then in the Sinop Fortress Prison, he was released in 1933 in an amnesty granted to mark the 10th anniversary of the declaration of the Republic of Turkey. The contents of the bag he had with him survive in a photograph that appeared in a national newspaper in January 1949, and again in the last pages of the memoir that his daughter, Filiz Ali, published in 1995.

A tale of young love and disenchantment, of missed opportunities and passion's elusive, flickering flame . Sometime later, Raif sees a woman in a fur coat that he quickly recognizes while strolling in the streets of Berlin at night. Ten years later, an old acquaintance of Raif from Berlin, who is also a relative of Maria, meets Raif in Ankara, with a child beside her. Raif is intensely in love with Maria, but he is not sure if she feels the same way, so he holds back. the story conveyns the depth and complexity of human mind and feelings, mystery of love, doubts and loneliness. After serving as a teacher in Yozgat for one year, he earned a fellowship from the Ministry of National Education and studied in Germany from 1928 to 1930.

It is not hard to see how a novel carrying those dreams but set far away, in a long lost Berlin, might promise a refuge, and some hope, to young readers in Turkey. In Turkey, meanwhile, Ali’s death continues to overshadow his life, in much the same way as his life overshadows his work – and with good reason.

It’s also a story about living in a prejudiced society which rewards certain egoistic behavioural patterns and humiliates the ones who do not conform to its norms and want to live according to their values of compassion, equality and kindness. recreates a vanished era and dramatises a doomed relationship, and does so with verve, depth and poignancy.

Perhaps it was Ali's lyrical and introspective prose, each word carefully woven like work of an artisan, that lingered and gave a glimpse of the innermost thoughts and desires of his characters. But with this book in their hands, they can see that a story that is true to itself, and honest about love, can travel through walls.Maria soon regains her strength, but Raif finds out that his father died and decides he needs to leave for Havran. Payments made using National Book Tokens are processed by National Book Tokens Ltd, and you can read their Terms and Conditions here. There he finds a sick Maria, who is finally convinced that Raif is not like any other man and actually is in love with her.
