At 3 1/2 he was able to use the audiobook function in the car on long journeys and with a bit of guidance quickly learned to touch the pictures of his favourite characters (Disney Pixar Cars book) to hear the sounds.

At almost four he is only just beginning to learn phonics but I believe this product is really going to help him learn and there are so many ways it can be used, I love the fact that it can break every word down. I also found that the reader was a little bit big for my son to hold but on the other hand if it was smaller and less sturdy it probably would not last as long. If you are interested, the software for the pen also downloads usage data from the pen when charging.The books are great we tested a few and were surprised at how easily and quickly our 3 year old took to this. Soon he was able to learn how the pen worked and let me know how he could listen to the ABC song and how he could switch to story mode. Using the book in a separate room is fine but when there are other things going on it's a little hard to hear what is being said. He had a really good go at writing on the paper and loved that he could do it and copy the examples.

I bought the Learn To Read vowel book sets and we sit together and he tries to sound out simple 3 letter words then we use the pen to see if he's correct and to explore the sounds. Was well worth the hassle and the wait as I now have a worth while reading tool to help my 6 year old who struggles with reading and writing and finds it's very hard to engage in anything remotely educational. One thing that we noticed was that the LeapReader book had tiny grey dots covering the whole page even the text and the images. Update: At 6 years old he can actually read all his Leapreader books but still enjoys using them with the pen when he wakes up very early to keep himself entertained in the early hours. The upside was that this time we had several books and games ready, and a little teacher to show my little one all the tips and tricks of the trade! It was exhilarating watching him master the concept within a month and start thinking he could teach me what to do. It charges via a USB port on your computer, and each charge lasts for at least 3+ hours in our experience. Loved that it helped with difficult words and allowed numbers and letter writing to be massively improved.
