Given my prior enjoyment of 'Of Mice and Men' and my fondness for war books, I was quite looking forward to reading this, and dived eagerly into it straight away. Heroes and 17 other books were challenged by Richard and Alice Ess, founders of the Fairfax County, Virginia group Parents Against Bad Book in Schools. Francis waits outside and stands frozen there in panic when he hears the sounds of Larry raping Nicole inside. stars but as I couldn't give it that, I've given it 4 stars because it definitely leans more towards four than three on the star spectrum. He is self-conscious about his appearance and so he wears a white silk aviators scarf given to him by a friend he made in the hospital over the lower half of his face and a Red Sox cap low over his eyes.

Then he thinks of Nicole one last time, along with the gun in his duffel bag and the possibility of his own suicide.Francis eventually defeats LaSalle in a game-- a source of pride until he learns that LaSalle let him win. At first, Francis considers suicide, but instead decides to forge his documentation so that he can enlist in the army, even though he is underage. Through various flashbacks, Francis relates the story of his simple and innocent childhood, which was centered on his quest to win the affection of Nicole Renard. He hopes to rekindle his relationship with her but she rebuffs him, claiming that she can never forget his betrayal at the Wreck Center.

Edwards Award, Phoenix Award from the the Children’s Literature Association, and many more, which captures the attention of more and more young adults.The novel explores the effects of Pearl Harbor on Frenchtown, as the Wreck Centre closes because of Larry's absence.

Back in the present time, Larry resurfaces in Frenchtown, and Francis puts a pistol in his pocket and tracks him down. Francis can’t bring himself to make good on his plan to avenge Nicole by killing Larry and so he walks away. At first Francis is too shy to even approach Nicole but when she starts dancing at the Wreck Center the two become close. Distraught, Francis waited outside of Nicole’s house for days until she finally came out and angrily sent him away. This is an extremely moving story, with a strong theme of deception and how someone's image can hide a multitude of sins.As Francis leaves, he hears the sound of gunshots coming from Larry’s building, indicating that Larry has committed suicide.
